It will work great, install however you want and then NEVER use!!!! You will pull the bumper straight off and make a mess of things! There is a co. that makes a hidden winch mount that will hide the winch, I dont know who it is, but someone on this board will! or just keep your eye on the classifieds on this board and something cool will turn up!! Factory mount,or something!
Peter.

DAP Distributing sells the Bearmach discreet winch mount for D1 and D2. I'm in the process of mounting one on my D2 as we speak.

John if you would post of how the install goes once you're done. P.S. here is the DAP link too http://www.dap-inc.com/acc_frm.htm hope that helps.

The install is not going well so far - the horizontal piece (that the winch bolts to) was bent in the wrong direction, so the winch mounting holes and slot for the wire rope to come out of are ass-backwards.

This is quite obvious, but despite a phone call to DAP today I've gotten no satisfaction. I took some digi photos this evening to better explain the problem, and have emailed them to DAP. Hope I hear from them soon, as in the mean time my front bumper is removed. I'll let you know how it goes from here.

Anyone have any photos of homemade winch mounts.? I'm sure with a little metal and a welder you could utilize the factory bumper..

Phil, Watch out when you say "utilize the factory bumper." I'm guessing you would make something to mount to the frame and not the factory bumper. That thin piece of metal behind the plastic and aluminium crush cans won't hold up well to 9,000lbs+ of pull.

Yes I would definately e using the frame.
I'm thinking of brackets which would mount or be welded to the backside of the bumper either onto the part which mounts to the frame or the frame itself. The bumper is held on by mounts which look like they just slide onto the frame rails and bolt on. The mounts look thick enuf. (not the bumper) I'll try and post a diagram of my idea in a post once I get the card board cut outs done.
I was hoping to find some pictures of bumpers (homemade or pro) I need to see the backside possibly mounted and unmounted. If I can't do it with the factory bumper I will most likely end up just utilizing the umper mounts and buld onto those (and stengthen them)

I have a VERY nice and subtle winch mount on my 1998 daily driver (that gets sand duties as well).
Basically, 2 "L" shaped 8mm steelies that run inside the frame horns, bolted to 3 bolts on each side (the original 1/2" bolts used for the bumper, and the larger 3/4" hole right behind them). The "L" brackets are just long enough to get the roller through the "spoiler" hole between the 2 fog lights on the bottom. Then all you need to do is get the original winch-manufacturer plate and drill it (or weld, I prefer drilling) and bolt it to the 2 "L" brackets. Put the winch there, and enjoy :-). Note that you can only use the "non-i" planetary winches with this.

Nadim, Got any pics of this mount? It sounds like a simple and effective design.
