1996 Discovery - 150K miles

I noticed that I had oil filling and leaking out of the dust cap on one axle. This was evident because of all the oil that was coating the wheel. After checking with dealer and the manual I figured it was the Swivel oil leaking past the stub axle seal. The gaskets and seals where less then $20 at the dealer (a big surprise). It all came apart very easily (especially when I had a 2 3/32 socket I got from Napa for wheel nut). But when I had the stub axle in my hand I realized I could not the bearing out from the backside and my small puller could not grab the race sufficiently to get it out.

I brought it to my local dealer - found out they had special Land Rover tools and offered to remove it for .3 hours labor (20 minutes) for $28.50. Its all back together now with repacked wheel bearings and it seems to run much better. It appears I'll need to do the other side and I was wondering whether anyone has an alternate suggestion of how to remove the stub axle bearing and seal or is taking it to the dealer for $28 the best option

Thanks

Use a screwdriver to take out and a big socket to hammer in lightly.

also, a flat headed round punch works well. anything you can stick in there and tap on the lip. It will take some time going a round and a round until it all comes out, but it will. to get the race back in, tap the new race in a bit to the hole, and then take your old race and place it on toop of the new one. Hit it with a hammer, and you will tap in the new race, using the old race as the "middle man" to take any damage
