I posted a thread the other week about my 94 Disco overheating. I have concluded that the problem only happens with the AC on. The temp is steady without the AC on. What is it about the AC that is causing the engine to overheat. Any thoughts out there?
I don't think it can be the thermostat/viscous fan/water pump, as the engine is fine without the AC on.
PS it only happens at highway speeds and/or climbing hills. I switch off the AC the temp will remain steady and then drop as I have less engine load.

Clogged radiator. Usually the temp goes up when at a long light with ac on. You have two options rod and clean or buy a new radiatior. If you rod and clean make sure both tanks are done.

Good Luck

Douglas,

I had a similar problem. I changed everything to find out that my radiator was clogged. My advice would be to take out the radiator and check it out. Don't be afraid, it is really easy. I found the best price from Nathen ($100 below Atlantic British's wholesale price, $200 less than retail). If your car has 100K or over I would have to say that it is indeed the radiator.

Note that there are elec fans in the front of your radiator which should come on when when the AC is turned on(ig switch must be in the ON position too). However, that is probably not the problem, it's just something to check. Actually I would guess that the only connection between the AC and your over heating problem is the extra load caused by that whole AC system.

Also check to make sure that the system is full, and it is under pressure(no leaks). 15 pounds of pressure raises the boiling point 30 degrees.

If you look in the owners manual it will say to change the coolant every two years(six times on your '94). Most people never do that. The radiator business is easy to find in the yellow pages.

You can buy a little time to replace the raditor on your own terms by removing the thermostat. Coolant will be much less likely to overheat without the thermostat restricting the flow. Whatever the problem is, avoid ruining your engine by overheating it.

It's not only the load of the engine with the A/C on. The condensor builds up a lot of heat. That's why there are electric fans to aid in the cooling process even more. Think about your A/C at home. There is a huge fan in the unit to cool the fins on the condensor.

You can try changing your coolant, flushing it, etc. Nothing will work if your radiator is really clogged. Trust me, get it rotted or order a new one. That is if you determine that it is bad. I would bet money that it is in fact your radiator. Call Nathen.
