My POS 97 Disco has yet another prob. It overheated by the gauge, the needle was on the 'H', and fluctuating up and down. The engine itself didnt seem to be too hot, i was still able to touch the radiator hoses. However, i am taking precautions against overheating, and want to know can i leave the thermostat out??? I tested the thermostat in a pot of boiling water, and it didnt open every time i put it in, and when it did open, it didnt open very far. Can i leave it out?????

I left mine out for a few days while waiting on the new one to arrive. No problems.

Running with out a thermostat can cause fast idle problems and high fuel consumption. They are just a generic unit 82degC or 88degC depending on the market. $10

well we are selling it to a car yard anyways.so it can use all the fuel it wants. so long as it runs when they take it for a test drive. it does seem as though it is missing a bit. maybe a blocked injector?????

lol...well i dunno if yours will be as bad..we have had ours for about 8 months..first it just was driving along fine one day then just stalled out and wouldnt start. had it put on a truck and taken home. then about 1/2 hour later i went outside turned the key..she fired right up...?? dunno wat that was all about..then an alternator bearing. then front unis. then all four sets of brake pads. then the viscous fan shit itself. then the indicators stopped working. have no idea why. they work sometimes then they dont. then it overheated in a cloud of steam. nothing blocked. had it flushed and removed thermostat. dunno why it got hot. thermostat was fine. then the temp sender unit died. oh and the heater core exploded sending hot water everywhere. it leaks alot of oil. but cant find out where. the transfer leaks. the swivels leak grease into the diff. it squeaks and rattles. a horrendous bearing noise has started up in the engine compartment and the transfer whines loudly. brakes squeal constantly while driving...even though they have done about 3000 kms only. the fuel pump died and had to be replaced. now it is hard to start when cold. it runs fine in gear but in nuetral it revs up and down. when it revs anywhere over 750 rpm it starts mis firing. you know. the usual everyday probs you would expect to clock up in the first 17 000 kms you do in a car. car has done about 12 000 miles since we have had it. and we are sick of fixing it. we do have a warranty but the warranty centre is over 150 miles away. how do i get the damn thing there when my fuel pump is cactus? grrrr...but off road the thing is mad!!! however i am going to bow out of the 4wd cars for 12 months while i build my own. im thinking a short wheel base nissan patrol GQ converted to a ute. very nice..we never will buy a rover again.

todd sounds like you have been really unlucky, i too have had similar list of problems, mind you it is a 1989 disco which has had serious offroad abuse, it wasnt well looked after before i had it and i am spending an arm and a leg getting it right, but will continue cause i just love it, saying that it does get frustrating when you think that must be it now then something else just breaks or just plain wears out, flipped mine over two years ago, and had to have rear end of chassis straightened and patched up. but i have friends with the same vehicles all be it newer ones and they have had no problems except for the od light bulb blowing and normal repairs etc. guess some are good and some are bad, think it depends on which day of the week it was built, ha ! anyway if you get a good one you love em and sometimes even a bad one can still be fun.
