A co-worker of mine was in Manhattan last night and said he saw the new Defender, a new Range Rover and a new Discovery in front of the Plaza Hotel last night....all in a shiny Orange color. Apparently, they were all kitted out with roof racks and lights, etc. Anyone know what might be going on?

He said he thought about calling me...but changed his mind (he doesn't know :-))

Just asking......

Chris, my sister-in-law saw them also. She said they look great! I will have some pics in a few days. Based on her description they looked like the Kalahari edition. Boy, that's being a LR fan, I even have my sister-in-law trained to spot a Rover...beats Ron's VCR story...hehehe

John,

Pics would be awesome. Could this be the elusive NAS reintroduction of the Defender? I guess pics of the inside to see if it had an airbag would be too much to ask for, depending on how well you trained the sister-in-law. :-)

That's gonna be a hard one Trevor. I don't have her that well trained yet. I can probably get you pics of her airbags if you'd like :)

She could have got the the Defender confused with the Freelander, but lets keep out hopes up on the Defender.

My friend indicated that it was 'boxy' like my 109....I just showed him a pic of a D-90....not the new one...but he said it looked similar....

Are they really thinking of trying to bring in an NAS D90?

Actually what my sister in law described to me was more like a 110. She said it was dual cabin. She knows what a D90 and a Freelander look like.

I did make it down there.....there was one of each. A Freelander, a disco, a D110 and a RR. The disco and RR were definitely 2003 models. I believe the D110 was a 2003...the tell-tale would have been the dash...but I didn't get a good look. I took some stills...but I still need to get them developed (no digital camera...). They were all Kalahari Orange (or Trek Orange). All had Safety Devices roof racks...the 110 and disco had winches.

Looking in the windshield...there was a NY parking permit for TV...the writing showed that they were shooting video of some sort....a commercial or movie or something...

I will post pictures as soon as I get them developed....

Funny thing...a few weeks ago I come across a AA Yellow D90 with rack, ARB bumpers, winch, etc...and I see the owner next to it (tall russian guy). I ask him if he takes it off-road and he says "Driving in Manhattan is like off-roading..." yeah right! What the freak does he have a decked out D90 for? He should've bought a Lexus...what a shame...

I might take a ride at lunch time to the Plaza Hotel and see if they are still there.

I ran into the four vehicles today in Fort Mason, San Francisco, CA.

The 110 was not NAS spec and had no airbag according to the driver. He also told me they were scouting locations for a Land Rover "contest" in the United States next year. He said it was to involve 80?! countries and would take place all over the U.S.

The trucks were the ones from pics on Solihull Society's page; a D110 (Euro-spec), Freelander, D3 and Range Rover 2003.

Since the D110 is Euro-spec and it is in the US by permit, does anyone else get the notion that the Defender will be available again in the US in the near future?

Erik: Did the D110 have the Td5 engine?

No, I don't get that notion. I wish, but, that's just a wish.... and, even if it was, $$$$.....

You can bring a 110 in, legally, for rally use, or competition, etc., just not for personal transportation uses.

FWIW...

It's so unfortunate that the Defender models costs so much here in the US. Considering that in other countries the Defender costs less than Discos (when compared in the relative sense in equivalent engines and trim).

In other countries the rover is viewed as a utilitarian vehicle, a car that you work out of and to be somewhat affordable. In the US it seems as if most people view it as a luxury vehicle and it gives LRNA the ability to charge a higher premium on top of the import duty.

Leslie, not all exactly true...there's a Camel Trophy 110 on the other side of town from me. I see it every time I pass by the main street by his house. It's the real thing too, sand ladders, winch and Camel Trophy signs. I'll try to take a picture of it this week.

Erik, do you know how long they'll be in town?

thanks...

A buddy who works at the Fairmont SF told me that they had taken over the hotel parking annex on Powell Street for the next couple of days.

I was on my way to a job at Ft. Mason, so didn't spend more than a minute with the crew - and wish I'd had more time to look over the kit on all the trucks. I don't know if it was petrol or diesel (Td5) - wish I'd asked! Sorry.

The Range Rover looks like one of those modified pre-release trucks - kinda fakey-looking. So much plastic on the front end now!

The 110 driver said they were not continuing on to Alaska and the the Bay Area was the end of the line.

Cheers,

e

When I saw them in Manhattan...there were no definitive markings on the side or rear to show td5....I guess I could've crawled underneath..

I did notice that the snorkel was on the passenger side and went in through the side of the fender like on the 300 tdi's.....for the V8's, I think they go in on top of the fender on the driver's side. If that means anything....

They were pretty nice....I wish I had seen them in day time.
