Right after I just dropped $2000 (not to mention that it was the last of my student loan money) in March on a brand new engine.

The %$#@ing overflow resivior for the radiator got a small crack in it and caused the engine to overheat. That warped my BRAND NEW intake manifold gasket, and caused a serious oil leak.

Then the little POS plastic plug in the top of the radiator breaks off, and the SOB overheats again warping my second brandnew intake manifold gasket and causing an even worse oil leak.

Well I just got that replaced AGAIN.

Now the breaks are grinding metal, because the last time I bought break pads I could not find any with metal squeek sensors on them, and the electronic crap does not work, just like everything else on this pile of shit does not work.

I owe more than the bitch could sell for in mint condition, and I am far from that.

Anyone have mob ties, I need to get this thing boosted.

"Build quality of the 1996-7 Discoveries is the lowest of any modern Land Rover product. Avoid these years if possible."

BJ, where do you live, man? Someone take this guy out and buy him as many beers as he can drink, and then drive him home. I think we all know your pain.

BJ,
What was the Temp gauge doing while the motor was cooking,or what where your eyes doing while the Temp Gauge was telling you your Motor was cocking?
You could have used some of the water I hope you always carry in the back for just such times.

Cooling issues are no more a problem in Rovers than any other water cooled vehicle. Any sealed system which is linked by hoses, secured by clips and incorporates things such as overflow pressure reservoirs made of synthetic material CAN FAIL.

The very best insurance for a few dollars (about $70 Oz) is a buzzer alarmed sensor which inserts into the radiator top tank. If the top tank empties of coolant, the buzzer sounds. Some preventative methods are reasonably cheap, and a Haynes manual will also give you the items to check at regular service intervals. You don't have to be a rocket scientist (thank God, for my sake) to run regular checks on fluid levels and component wear.
Sorry about your troubles.

I learned my leason after trashing an engine by driving with the "check engine" light on. Good thing it was a company car! If my light ever comes on I will jam the brakes on and pull over to check it out. Get the auto club service to check 'er out if need be. If you don't belong-GET A MEMBERSHIP!!- one call pays for itself. I don't carry water in the back but a full bladder works in a pinch. Ya could just as easily walk to a store or a body of water and use the glove box as a bucket if you are stranded in the middle of nowhere.

I have to disagree with the 96 build quality theory some people throw around. I have a 96 and it has been flawless.Engine was replaced supposedly for spun bearings under warranty by dealership at 69000 miles. To make a long story short I insisted on getting the old block back dealer gave me a hard time but in the end I got it, guess what no spun bearings, rod bearings had slight wear. Truck is a daily driver and gives me no problems at all.

150k on my 96 and no problems and if it sees an oil change at 10k it's lucky.

The camshaft on my '96 broke in half at 33K, complete long block done on warranty. I bought it at 60K and other than the exhaust manifold bolts being finger tight, no engine probs.

Sorry to hear about your grief.

In Florida we insure it fully and drop it in a canal - in Boston we took them to dodgy neighborhoods and burnt them. Usually costs about a "G" and if you find a guy let me know.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, that's horrible.

There is an empty lot on the beach that has been packed full of vehicles whenever a tropical storm is heading our way. The rest of the time it's just an empty lot. When storms come, the lot floods deep right before the streets flood. Every vehicle in the lot gets totalled by insurance companies. I can't figure out why people are able to get away with that -- surely insurance companies must have caught on by now?? This has been going on for years!

The really sad thing about that lot is that most of the cars that get parked there to be flooded are mercedes. I've never figured that one out.

BJ, I wish you the best.

You have to watch that overheating -- it can be fatal to an aluminum motor like the Rover's.

I had a thermostat go bad off road on my '95 shortly after I put in a brand-new $$$$ 4.6 long block. Luckily, I caught it and turned on the heater full blast to cool it off. It was 100 + outside and I about roasted my legs, but I managed to save it before the temp guage pegged on H. It was a long ride back in the thick of an Arkansas summer with the heater on high!!! Now I change the thermostat out ($10 part) along with the coolant every 10 K miles -- cheap insurance. Will also change all hoses every 2 or 3 years, as necessary.

My coolant reservoir split on me a couple of summers ago, but I noticed the smell and steam of leaking coolant before it overheated. I replaced it with one of the white aftermarket tanks that you can more or less see through to check the coolant level every fill up.

I also had trouble with those cheap-ass plastic radiator caps -- I broke about 4 before I switched to the all-brass one (I think I got it from Rover Exchange for about $15).

Good luck with the motor! Hopefully you haven't warped the heads, cracked the block or slipped a sleeve!!!!

Sorry to hear this! Ouch! We have 145,000 on the Mrs. Ratcliffe's 97, and it is motoring along.

Earlier someone suggested heavy drinking. It doesn't help, but after awhile it doesn't hurt as much. Good luck.

BJ,

YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR PROFILE PICTURE.

I looked at your PROFILE after reading Rob's post. In this mostly male dominated sport, us "girls" feel very fortunate that you "guys" watch out for us, teach us, and are very protective of us.

ALL of the guys of the rover community are MANLY MEN. Any guy that attempted to dance in his underwear in our presence would find himself flat on the ground in the blink of an eye.

I also noted that you are a student. Recently, we've had a few inquires from new owners - who are also students -- and they are girls your age. Come on BJ, don't scare them off... change your picture.

If you want to get away with dancing in your underwear on the web, you've got to look like this:

Hey...this guy is an Aggie, you can't expect that much from someone (male or female) whose school buries their dead mascots in the football stadium endzone. Anyone inslulted by that comment, please note it was strictly intentional.

"who the fuck is JE Robison, and how did he become an authority on problematic Land Rover model years? "

blue - opening your mouth to switch feet again, I see.

JE is a better tech than you could ever hope to be - he's helped a lot of people on here, including me, and off a lot of other boards as well - pro bono. maybe after you run a multi-staff british repair shop for 17 years you'll stop spewing bullshit about people and things you have no knowledge of. why do i bother even coming over here.

Well that's why I asked, anonymous numbnuts. What bullshit did I spew? Who is he, and how did he become an authority? So who is he? And why do you bother coming "over here"?

How could you know who is a better tech, do you know Blue? He just asked a damn question, thought it may seemed a bit harsh, still asking a question. What a shit head.

LOL, I'm no tech.

I asked because Robinson's quote was posted up there as if it is THE authoritative statement on this topic, and no further discussion is warranted. Obviously, Dancin BJ Turner's angst could have been avoided if only he had listened to Robinson's succinct advice.

LOFL, now I see who JE Robison is. Different line of work than JE Robinson. Try googling "JE Robinson" and you'll get a guy making shoes in Liverpool.

I guess this means I better dump my 96 Disco while it's still operating perfectly :-)

(and now I also know who the has-been "Coolerthanyou" is...what a chump)

Dancin BJTurner. I have been to College Station many times, and have never seen something as unique as BJ's bio pic.

I have a lot more respect for guys like BJ. At least they will post their name instead of something gay like "you wish (Coolerthanyou)"

In response to some...

1st -- The times that my engine has overheated, all the water boiled out, and the temp gauge reported air temperature, which was misleading from the cab, so the only way I could tell that it was hot was knocking, and smoking.

2nd -- That is not me in the picture, it's a friend of mine, and I wanted to see how long it would be before it gathered a remark. It's been well over a year. I suppose now I can change it.

3rd -- Luke Tolsen: The traditional rivalry between "TU" and the good ole' Ags has been fierce but respectable, that was just plain tacky. Where ever we bury our beloved Reveille is better than some BEVO BBQ. By the way, do you know how BEVO got the name???

For those who don't know, we branded the score of a winning game into their side of beef they called a mascot, so to save face they had to get creative and now they call it BEVO. Now and forever!!!!
