There is still no charge for posting ads in the classified sections. However, once an item sells as a result of an ad posted on DiscoWeb, we ask that the seller send a donation to DiscoWeb in order to help defray the cost of operating the website. Suggested donation amount is 5% of the sales price.

DiscoWeb does not assume responsibility for any transaction resulting from posts in the classified sections, nor do we guarantee the accuracy of any ad. You post or reply to posts at your own risk.

Matt - the information here is free and I'm betting that you've benefited more than once from it. Also, if you've noticed there are no ads of any sort. This site is a privately run site that the founders have put up their own money and anything they generate from the sale of t-shirts, videos and stickers goes towards the maintenance of the site, like the use of this web board. You look like a fairly new member so maybe you should explain why you think you should get this all for free?

As the above policy says, "suggested donation". This is not mandatory but a suggestion and I think that it is a reasonable suggestion. You think posting on ebay is free?

Show a little class. If you don't like the policy, then don't use the site.

Alan and others,

You should charge a fee like $5 or $10 a year access charge to help you guys keeping the site going. I would definately pay just on the tech advice I get here.

Hey people buy a shirt or some stickers.

I know that I bought some Stickers and a shirt to show my support. I wouldn't mind paying a couple of bucks to keep this site going if it were asked for.

I have been a long time member of a Porsche site called Rennlist. For a yearly fee of $15, you get a membership that gets you discounts from participating Porsche supply companies, etc. Plus you get the enormous benefit of keeping the site up and running and expanding. You do not need to pay to use the site, but the $15 membership is the least that a person could do to support a site that saved me several $1000 over the past year.

I would be more than happy to pay a membership fee for this site, considering that I have saved several $100 in repairs that were detailed in the threads of this forum.

Lets try to get British-Atlantic to give a discount to members and get a system up and running!

I bought stickers and a shirt recently to support the site and hopefully a DVD soon when I decide which one. Myself I would be more than happy to shell out a lousy $15.00-$20.00 a year to keep it going. The guys who run this site do it out of their love of Rovers and are not getting rich. Support the team!

Matt, if you don't want to help the site out, don't. But don't ask questions or look for answers. It is your type with an attitude that is making this a different place - it has changed a lot since I got my Discovery in December - and frankly, it isn't as nice. Discoweb has saved me a bunch of money and I find it a valuable resource, thus I've bought tshirts, dvds, etc ... I hope it stays a valuable resource as well and I would be happy to pay an annual subscription and hope to keep some of the jerks out.

I agree with everyone so far, except Matt. In addition to that:
"once an item sells as a result of an ad posted on DiscoWeb " ONLY!!!!!!!!!
if you sell "shit" Matt!

You got my vote for the annual fee.

Proabably. We are now experimenting with a new registration process where all new accounts require moderator approval, that should cut down on this kind of thing.

That's one of the functions of the lounge. Ho, Kyle and myself can't always read every single thread, so the lounge members help identify undesirable elements that does not belong on the board.

Axel, I'm all in favor of the Lounge, no big surprise there. But don't you agree an annual fee would rid the d-web of the undesirables?

I am fairly new to Discoweb and would happily pay a fee, but I think you would need some kind of trial period so newbies could see how much the site has to offer. I have had my Rover for almost 2 years and have been enjoying everyone's info for almost that long. Where else can you get so much info for free? A fee is okay as long as d-web keeps going!

We aren't ruling out a yearly fee, but there is some things that would have to be considered, for example how to best keep track of expired accounts, which areas should be public and which should not and so on. It's not as straight forward as it might seem at first. And we would have to do it in a way that does not add an unreasonable amount of administration. We might have to ditch Discus and move to another type of bbs in order to easily do it, too.

For now we'll see how things go with the donation scheme. It is on the honor system obviously, but by looking at who donates when they sell something and who don't, we will get a pretty good idea of who should stay and who should go, won't we? :-)

Axel-
As I stated above I am strongly in favor of an annual fee. However if a person pays the annual fee than gets booted for foolish behavior, could they take legal action against Dweb for not coming through with "services" that were paid for? Just a thought!

There would have to be a rules and agreements in place for that kind of situation, of course. As long as the rules is clerly spelled out, it's no different than aol suspending an account for abusive behaviour.

Anyone who purports to be in favor of an annual fee and claims he's willing to help out DiscoWeb really doesn't have to wait for a formal policy to be enacted. Just go to:

http://www.discoweb.org/donation/

And make your donation. Or, if you like shirts or DVD's:

http://www.discoweb.org/store/

It really is that simple.

Uh oh I being called out! Anyway I just sent Dweb $20.00 via Paypal. It's so easy everyone, just do it. Hey maybe I'll start a trend? Yeah right! Maybe when pigs can fly! I do appreciate all the hard work that goes into this site, thanks all.

As I stated earlier, please take a look at the Rennlist site. This site has succesfully integrated a voluntary membership system. Instead of reinventing the wheel, I think it would be a great source to model these boards after.

Secondly, I already have a wholesale account with British/Atlantic and I would be more than happy to see if they would be willing to give exclusive discounts/deals to Disco Web members.

As far as banning people, etc, I would make a standard rule guide that would state the effects of incorrect behaviour.

I would be more than happy to help in any way with drawing this up or in any other way to form a true membership program.

And in the meantime, I am donating $30 as of right now to the cause. I challenge the next poster to meet or beat this donation ;0)

The whole anual fee just opens up too much BS. This is a nice clean simple way of taking care of buisness. You use the site to make money and you simply drop a little of that off. Its simply taking a little bit of the cash off the top of the money that is being made on our BBS. That aint much to ask... And MAtt , for gods sake please dont sell anything moron... Thats the only way you would be affected dipshit....

That would be just fine...... :-)
Seriously though, we feel that asking for a donation only when an item is sold is reasonable.
