After a nine year love/hate relationship with Disco’s I called it goodbye on Saturday to Land Rover and Hello to the Touareg. So far I have put 500 miles on the VW all mixed city and highway but so far this is the best SUV ever the fit and finish is awesome the driving feel is very BMW’ish. As soon as I test the brochures claims of 45% climbs, 30% cross angle runs, 22.3 inch river crossings, I will let the disco web know but at this time. It’s the best car, truck, suv ,crossover, or whatever class vehicle I have ever had.

Goodbuy or Good-bye?

I checked out the Toureg and was shocked at the sticker price. Locally it was priced at $46K for the W8 or V8 or whatever it was. It seemed like a cool car, but I just can't get $46K for a VW.

Good-bye.

Actually I think the Toureg is better built than say the M-Class and/or the X5. I think VW coming late into the SUV scene was able to see the pros and cons of it's target competition and made the toureg better. I've test driven it at my local VW dealer and it has a better finish inside, better materials, and good proportion. A few close friends have the M-class and they all complain about the quality and feel of the materials MB used on the interior.

That said, if I had $46K, I don't think it will go to my VW dealer.

Just my dos centavos...

good luck dave and i hope that it works out for you...

but now my .02... ;)

i am getting so tired of companies advertising products as something that they are not. tiger woods and that damn buick rendevous that has the "handling of a touring car, space of a minivan and capibilites of a suv," pisses me off every time i see it. in my humble but annoyed opinion it is a damn lie.

sure, for 97% of the people that drive "suv's," it will do everything that they need it to do, but, again IMHO, the ability to drive up on the front lawn so it is easier to unload the pansies you just bought at home depot, does not qualify it as a "SUV."

sorry...but i think it would just be nice to see a little honesty these days...

but! let us know how that thing works out, dave. i looked at the audi allroad for a while, so for me, as a second car, it might be pretty cool!

On paper, or on screen rather, the Touareg looks very capable. Except for one thing, and that's that the suspension seems to have very little flex. I've seen video of the Touareg at Moab, and what it can get over is impressive, but it seems always to have a wheel off the ground. Do let us know what you think when you start doing some offroad trips.

I can't wait for about 5 years to come when I can replace the subaru with a used one. No possible way would you get me to shell out that kind of money for any vehicle (unless I win the lotto that is).

For MOST people who drive SUV's it definately fits the bill!!! Most people who drive SUV's really need a Minivan but don't want to drive a Minivan! That's why they started selling station wagons again, but now they've given them four wheel drive and raised them off the ground a bit. What's next??? How bout a full size cargo van with four captains chairs, four wheel drive, and a small lift. But ya gotta make it look cool so the middle aged, chubby, bald guys can think that the twenty-nothing year old blonde in the jetta next to them is really "checking them out" with her girlfriends, NOT laughing it up!!! Reality sucks, long live fantasy!!!

Hello All,

First I must apologize for the spelling it was late after a long drive.

However, just to add a little food for thought my new VW’s window was $35,515.00. Included in that price is a $615 destination charge. Due to the addition of a company car we decided to trade ( 03 VW Cabrio and 99 Disco II SE7) our two cars for the VW. The nice thing is now we actually pay about $70 less a month in car payments.

If you go to the VW site you can see how the VW compares to a lot of the SUV Favorites including the Disco and when you build the base V6 like mine it comes very well equipped.

The only option I would have liked is the Xenon headlights my Disco had two Halla 3000’s and they came in handy more often then I had originally thought.

Good-bye and Good Night

Dave

The touareg can cost over $50k. Way, way overpriced for such a normal look. To me it looks little better than a passat on steroids. However the power and towing ability would be a very good feature for me. No way in hell would I buy the first model year or new.

However, whenever I drove it I would not be able to do the trails that I like to do, there is just no way that it could do them without major damage.

The Touareg might be a bargain compared with that other vehicle built on the same platform - the Porsche Cayenne. And don't forget that Volkswagen's V10 diesel is coming soon.

Funny, I just went to vw.com and when you compare the vw to a disco, is says the Land Rover does not have 4wd available. Damn, better keep the disco on the pavement.

When I was out in the Ouray/Telluride CO area a week or two ago the Cayenne were a dime a dozen. I must have seen at least 10 of them.

Of course all on pavement, not a single one even on any of the popular trails/dirt roads.
