Has anyone used some high milage Dextron III oil in a manual gearbox to help stop leaks? If so what ones would you recommend? Or is this a bad idea? (I have a 94 Disco)

ATF in a manual box is a bad I idea full stop Land rover hasn't used it for years. What you need is a light GL4 gear oil. I'm not sure what you can get in the US, I use either Castrol syntrans 75/80,Valvolene dura gear 75/85, Penrite xtralight gearbox oil. ATF causes tooth contact and syncro wear. Don't use a normal GL5 80/90, if you do it wont change gears. LT77 and R380 boxes often leak from the gear shifter. The top of the box vibrates loose.

The manual says use ATFIII for both a stick and auto transmission. What else would you recommend?
Does anyone recommend something to stop leaks?

Use Redline MTL

others have had good luck with this apparently, but it will do nothing for leaks - it is just a better lubricant.

No one uses Atf in them anymore not even Landrover. In fact many of the LR work shops won't warrenty a rebuilt box if you use ATF. ATF causes syncro wear and tooth contact. Landrover still uses a version of this box and they don't put ATF in them. Caltex in Australia make a GL4 oil that is called Landrover gearbox oil (I think this may be texaco in the US). Where does it leak from.

The leak seems to be on top, somewhere on the rear of the unit where it joins the Transfer case.

I reckon the shifter has come loose. The gearbox top often vibrate loose or the seal at the bottom of the stick fails.

If yours is an R380, you'd better stick to the Rover specced Caltex MTF94 (also called Rover MTF94 in some countries). THis is honey-coloured, and gives a far better shifting than when using what they recommended earlier years (pre servicebulletin 25.11.1998).

Frode
as I have already specified above this and other gl4 oils are suitable for both LT77 and r380 boxes I find Dura gear, Penrite xtralite and best of all Castrol syntrans to be the best.

GL4 is what is recommended in the diffs. Are you proposing that I can use the same in the manual gearbox?

No
Gl4 is the extreme pressure rating. 85/90 is to thick. What is needed is a Gl4 with a weight of 75w80. Too thick and they won't change gears. Valvoline sell one called Dura Gear 70/85 in OZ and this works well. Caltex make on called Landrover gearbox oil to the same spec. Castol syntrans is the best
