thanks. I just wondered. I am not sure if its my cats making noise or the bottom end of the motor. I hope its cats. I kinda smelled them today after a hard run.

I was worried too when I got a noise, turned out to be the cats, hopefully thats your problem too, I had a local muffler shop check the old cats and that was where the noise was coming from, they cut out the old ones and replaced them with the 6005, cost me around $250 for two installed. Avoid Midas or the other large chains, they will try to sell you their cat for much more. Try a shop that sells and installs the Catco's, or you could buy them direct from Summitracing.com for something like $65/each and do it yourself if you have the tools and knowledge, I sure don't.

I just had my '94 D1 inspected and the Rover mechanic said I was due for new cats and a mufflers (she's been making that nice "pinging" sound lately and I fear that I am losing power b/c the engine isn't breathing properly). He said the two would be $800 total. Is that reasonable? I

Another clue is very low power and bad knocking under acceleration and a hot engine. This happens when the catalyst gets contaminated, the engine cannot breathe right.

okay I will have my truck in the shop before the end of the year. I dont drive it much ever. I think 800 is too much go to a local exhaust shop you will have better luck. always shop around. make some phone calls you get the idea. as far as noise. I get more of a knock or so. not really a ping etc. the truck has 442xx miles.

Have a good trust worthy muffler shop check the cats, if you hear a laud metallic noise under the driver and passenger seat it's more than likely the cats! $800 bucks for Cat replacement its ridiculus, I've had a quote on mine for around $250.

800 dollars for the cats better be for the direct fit OEM standard cats. Otherwise, two universal cats should be available through a local muffler shop for anywhere around 100 - 150 dollars each installed.

Also, if the vehicle is 1996 or newer then you have to make sure they are OBDII compliant cats which cost a little more.

Out of curiosity, what is the difference between the universal cats, and the factory OEM cats? Also, does anyone out there make any high flow cats for the Discovery?

What kind of life expectancy can be expected from the cats? I always thought that catalytic converters generally are good for at least 100k miles or so.

Difference? The universals dont say LR on them. The catco cats you see mentioned are high-flow, which is why you see them at Summit Racing. They are not specifically for a Disco.

I replaced my factory cats at 87k miles or so. I now have close to 120k and the replacements are doing fine.

Another question I have, is how easy is the installation of a universal cat? I imagine it's not as easy as a genuine Land Rover factory part, correct?

Other than the price, factory or "Direct Fit" Cats are essentially a bolt on installation. Where universal cats require fitting i.e. cutting, welding and/or clamping to the existing pipes.

Yes they do make a high performance / flow cats. Virtually all the exhaust manufctures make a HP cat.

With regards to how long Cats usually last.. Technically and ideally they should last the life time of the vehicle. But vehicles rarely operate in ideal situtations, engine problems i.e. too rich or lean, oil burning, water from blown head gaskets all contribute to breaking down bricks inside the Cats leading to their demise.

After denting the hell out of my d-side cat on john bull at RR3 i'm getting that knocking sound.

I'm trying to asses just what sort of a problem this presents. the only symptom is the ticking/knocking noise. i don't notice any loss in power.

thoughts?

how do I know when the cat is toast?

does the summit racing cat result in higher emissions?

thanks and happy trails.

Jack.. if the cats are rattling, they need to be replaced, otherwise, depending on the year, it can drive the computer nuts and cause drivability and fuel mileage problems. You can most likely use a universal cat on your LR. Finally, a propely sized universal cat will NOT increase emissions.

Just replaced my cats yesterday, 107k miles and a new 4.6L in a '95 Disco. The cats themselves were $135 each. The symptoms were loss of power, heating up under load, and gas mileage dropped to 9 mpg. I went to a local (San Diego area) shop that does custom off-road work. He confirmed that the passenger side cat had grenaded and blocked that side of the exhaust system. He put on an entire system - 2 cats, muffler with heat shield, custom bent 3-inch pipe (up from the stock 2.5 inch), resonator and tip(steel - no chrome bling-bling here). He did re-use the y-pipe, but from the collector on back everything is 3 inch diameter. Total cost $695 with tax, $75 of which was labor. It's nice and quiet, no more overheating and lots of power. I'm anxious to see what improvement there is in gas mileage, especially now that regular is hitting $2/gallon.

just to clarify for myself:
the generic summit racing can replace either of the two cats on the Y?
I broke the cylindrical one (driver side) and the summit racing more closely resembles the passenger side.

not a problem right?
they do the same thing?

one has the 02 sensor before and one after.

thoughts?
