My 98 whith 94000 miles makes a tapping sound at start up when the motor is cold. the lifters are new. I think it is an exhast leak somewhere. the tapping sound will go away after few secounds. the manifolds look free of cracks and the gaskets going to the cats are new. |

You will also need to keep in mined that as the new Gasket,s settle with time, you may need to re adjust the bolts. Noel |

If it goes away after a few seconds - it is oil related. Make sure you are using a filter with a good anti-drainback valve. Also - try switching oil weights - what are you using? Bill |

My old Trooper had noisy lifters (they are notorious for it, sound almost like a diesel). the only cure, aside from pulling the lifters out and cleaning them, was to run some light winter duty oil to clean them out a bit. A change to synthetic also helps. $.02 |

Ditto to the oil filter comment. Are you running a Fram or some other pile? Its worth the extra few bucks to get a good quality filter - Fram is not one of 'em. |

Absolutely on the fram - had my fram filter on for about a week - threw it out and put a bosch one on - no probs after that Jeff |

My car does the exact same thing. When I first start it up in the morning, it makes a loud tapping/clapping noise, but then it goes away after a second or two. From then on whenever I start it up it doesn't make that noise unless its been several hours later, for example, at the end of the day when I go home from work. I have a genuine LR oil filter in now, do you think that's a problem? What do you guys think about K&N? |

Dennis, Have you eliminated the manifold gasket from the equation ? I went down the oil path too, changed the oil grade and filter and I was happy for 3-4 days and it started to come back (tapping) :-( I went down to the muffler centre one day and asked them to take a look at my left manifold. (tapping was on the left top end) The guy there got a short length of garden hose and stuck one end to his ear and the other end he move along to each outlet until he found that the rear outlet was leaking. I had a listen with the hose too and bang, I was happy it was the manifold gasket. I had a new gasket fitted and that was that, fixed. But I have been told that I may need to readjust the manifold bolts again as the manifold gasket settles, 5 months down the track and I have not needed to readjust the manifold bolts yet. My tapping sound also seemed to be able to choose when it wished to tap :-( Mostly at start up and under 2000 rpm in shopping centre car parks. Oh and it would go away after 15 mts of running at over 2000 rpm. $0.02 :-) Noel |

Thanks for the input noel. I think it is the gasket. I use LR oil filters and good oil. I will be ordering a set of gaskets soon and try them out. After i try the garden hose trick out. |
