So I was curious about if anyone knew how much it would cost to maintain a ferrari. Like the service and what they do in the services. In particular a 1998 F355 Spyder. I have heard it is thousands of dollers for service that has to be done very often. Can anyone shed some light on the topic for me, that would be awesome!

Chris,

C'mon man. You are looking at a limited production car that is precision made. It will cost you an assload. This may be of little help, but I doubt you can find two owners of the same Ferrari that even have similar maintenance bills. The way to look at a question like this is: "If you have to ask..."

If you really want to know - contact Trevor Griffiths at Treasured Motor Cars (410-833-2329) - a friend who has a British and Italian shop nearby. He does lots of Ferrari's and Lambo's and probably could give a you a good idea.

From spending time there - the maintenance costs are absolutely amazing and frequent. Pretty much if you have to ask, you can't afford it. :-)

Actually, insurance is not bad at all. Remember, insurance is based on the likelyhood of a claim, and there are very few Ferrari claims. Lot more expensive to insure a Corvette than a Ferrari.

As for the maintenance, just figure on about $1.50/mile. The major service (all belts and valve adj. is about $4000+ on the 355) Add in the other maintenance issues and your probably at the $1.50 figure. That's just been my experience.

Did you win the Lotto? I didn't know they paid valet parkers that much, I need a job where you work :-) Just do it, get the Ferrari, wish I could.

Of course if you park em' fast and do volume???....nevermind.

My ultimate car...other than a Rover....is the 456GT, in champagne with tan leather interior. Ok, so it's a four seater and I know that's not as COOL, but it's gorgeous. There is a red 360 Modena at our local Mercedes dealership and I liked it as well. But, alas, I will probably never own one.

An 18 year old male in a Ferrari?! Whoa. Hope the insurance agent was sitting DOWN! :-)

Good luck man, and if you get one, PLEASE send pics.

You could use my name. But I didn't win the lottery or anything like that, well just found a crap load of money. Not sure, but i am thinking about puting it away and not spending it. I will have to learn stick better, thats for sure if I do get it. I can drive pretty much any car a short distance while valeting, but on the street, thats another story. Still not sure, its like winning the lottery, you don't know what to do with all of it. But I really want a 456GT, I love that car soo much, but its a lot of money.

Maybe buy an older Ferrari that's not as expensive and put the rest into savings. You will enjoy it someday. Of course, the Ferrari's don't depreciate as fast as most cars, so you could enjoy it for a while and then re-sell it for the cash. Just be careful in it...so much power and so few open roads! ;)

Oh, and tell me how I can 'find' a "crap load of money!!!!" Cheers!

Buy things that don't depreciate, then end up with a crap load of money that's growing all the time. Take it from someone who "invested" in vehicles instead of really investing.

Chris, now or whenever you have a thick wad of c-notes in your hand, and you want to satisfy an urge for speed, buy a ~96 Carrera 4. You will not be disappointed, I promise. That bitch completely defies the _feeling_ of laws of physics. Clutch is stiff, but the engine's very forgiving.

Yea i don't like the porsche clutches, I have problems with those. I truthfuly like the F1 style transmission much better. But in all really how I got the money is that I inhearited a lot of stocks that have a large value so I could sell them and buy the ferrari or just keep them. I just found out recently about this. But the more I think about it the more I think it would be better to just save it and let it grow. But it is just really wierd for me now.

According to C&D, the rotors for that Enzo in John's pics are $24000. And the pads are $7000. And the motor oil is something like $40/quart. At 12 quarts per change, that's a pretty nice little job for a Grease Monkey.

So, I'd say the maintenance alone would eventually break the small Lotto winner.

I'm sure the 355 is considerably less, since the engine alone on the Enzo is over $200k.

Screw the stick, get a 360 with F1 paddle shifters. My brother has had one for about 3 years. Last time I was back in England he took us to Rockingham Motor Speedway (the UK version) just before it officially opened. His club had a track day. A most excellent experience - absolutely stunning performance - and he's not afraid to throw it around either. 160 mph in air conditioned comfort, well, except for the full-face helmet :-) Oh, in a Rover-like moment the central locking died shut and we had to climb out of the windows. I'm going over next week - I'll snap some pics.

Try doing a search on yahoo for Ferrari 308 or 328. I was considering buying the Magnum P.I. version a few years back and found a web site that describes in detail some of the costs involved. This could give you a starting point for info on the F355.

If oil quantity is bad ass then the 911 has it beat with 13 liters.

I would agree with one of the previous posts. Get a carrera and pocket the extra cash. How come I can never just find a pile of money? Even a small pile will do.

Tim if you would like I can send you the stocks, they are all power companies that were invested in. And that would be bad if it leaked like the rover has, losing 1/3rd of its oil in 1 hour of driving, ouch!

Ferrari just doesn't seem right unless it's red.

If I ever have the money to own one however, it would be any of the 60's GT. Anyone of them seems just fine but this particular '66 330GT on eBay is giving me serious wood. I can almost here that V12!!!!

For sure I'd go with the D90. I keep telling myself that if I learn to drive off road really really good - then I can earn myself a D90?

Don't get me wrong, I luv my D2 and we are both growing together in our skills. However, when I have been around D90s, I have felt like I was driving a baby buggy on bunny hills.

Someday, I really HOPE to have an older rover. I think they look even better banged up from trails, they have so much character!!

If you could send me the stocks that would be great. I am far from a big invester, but just curious. You mentioned a possible D-90 purchase, I looked at this today and it was very nice!

It did need a good buffing of the paint but was very clean and the low mileage is nice.

355 is an excellent car. As far as service goes it is totally relative on where you go. You said that you were moving to Cincinnati; there are some excellent Ferrari mechanics here. I have done some work on late model Ferraris...F50, Enzo, F40. Things are just so hard to get at lots of times, and most people don't take the time to put it all back together correctly. For example, when I did the cam belts in the F40 you have to take out the seats and do all the engine work from through the interior. And everything has a special fastener holding on some odd panel. These are the kinds of things careless mechanics do not take the time to put back correctly. You will get into it and it will be full of hardware store fasteners and then you have no idea how to do it right, even in you do order the right ones from Ferrari at $4 a screw. If you do need parts Algar in Philly is who I have always dealt with and they do a great job.

As far as which model to get, I wouldn't get a stick regardless. I would something with the F1 package, 355 or 360. In my opinion the 360 would be a better investment in the short run. Not that the 355 is going to go down or anything, but the 360 is hot right now. I just got back from Pebble Beach where I saw 6 Enzos, about 100 360s, and about 50 355s. There was a 360 Modena that went through the auction, it got bid up to $135 and didn't sell. Either way I can put you in touch with a couple brokers that could point you in the right direction. That is helpful just because you can set your price and they will make sure you get a good car.

The Enzo stuff starts to sound even more expensive when you find out that under hard braking pads last 500 miles and the carbon fiber rotors last 1000 miles. And the oil is so expensive because they use Agip and I don't know anyplace in the US that retails it, but I really haven't looked.

That F355 is probably due for a timing belt and that is one of the pricier services.

of course despite John's link if you get a Ferrari I'm afraid you'll need to make the switch to Facom tools as they are what the Ferrari team, Michael Schumacher and myself and a few other dwebbers use.

http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp?L1=L1_2000&L2=L2_2010&SKU=FER129

unfortunately my modest collection is not yet as extensive as the F1 set.

don't get me wrong, Snap-On is an excellent tool, this just happens to be my personal choice.

Chris, look at the 360 Challange Stradale. A good mix between the road and the challange car. the ultimate weapon.

Matt, Ferrari doesn't use Agip anymore. They are tight with Shell now and Shell has developed a special oil for just the Enzo, hence the high price.

The Stradale has the same carbon fiber brakes that the Enzo has and hence you will incur the same cost. Mike you are right. I remember seeing the Shell stuff in the 360 manual. I don't know why I thought the Enzo was the same as the F50. I will look in the Enzo manual on Monday.

Hey Matt, I just saw that. Odd that the challenge cars use a conventional braking system and the Stradale uses the more high tech ccm system. One would think the ccm would be more appropriate for the track/challenge than the road that a Stradale will do. I wonder if they will switch the challenge cars over next model year?
