Sorry guys, this is not an off-road comparison question! My father has recently been looking for a new car and I've been helping with the suggestions/research. He has been driving a Dodge Caravan for years and loves it, even though the stupid thing is falling apart. Now here is a man who has had some of the coolest cars in the world (with the exception of the exotics)...and he likes a minivan! Something about age and wisdom...

ANYWAY, my mother and I have been trying to steer him in the direction of something a little more 'manly' and less soccer-mom-ish...and low and behold, he found a 1997 Range Rover 4.6HSE that he really likes. However, he doesn't really need the 4wd, is a bit bothered by the gas mileage (although it won't really be a problem...they have a traveling car already) and wants almost as much 'hauling' space as the minivan. SO, here's the deal. It's a 1997 HSE, British Racing green with the Kensington Package and Lightstone leather interior, brush guard with Hellas, tail lamp guards, etc. No roof rack. Fully loaded and 60K miles. THey are asking 22K, I told him not to offer more than 20K? Does that sound like a good deal? They say it is in PERFECT shape and drives like a dream. I'm thinking inheritance here people....hahahaha

Secondly, I'm thinking he should look at the Mercedes ML series. We have had lots of Mercs in our family and have loved them all, and I think they get slightly better gas mileage than the Rover and aren't quite as geared for off-road. Does anyone on this board own one? Can you share some info or comparisons?

They both really liked the Chrysler Pacifica, but don't want to pay the new car price or buy the first year's model. They are, afterall, still paying for my wedding! :-) J/K

Do not get an ML, lots of info out there on the web about what pos they are, the interior is really cheap, crappy trim, and older models were not very well built, boss has a 2002 model and I was shocked to see how cheap the interior bits were, but it has been pretty reliable. If he gets an RR, I hope he has the patience and the dough to maintain it, or get an extended warranty from a reputable company, yeah right. I personally do not recommed a Rover to any of my family members or close friends, unless they understand fully what they are getting into, you might get a really mad Father, when the thing drops to the bumpstops due to EAS failure or one of the many little gremlins rovers are known for start popping up :-)

i saw a few of them this weekend and they sold for between 15-17K at auction. so 20K is still a little high, but offer about 18K or so. they can only say no. start low. as you know RR's are not huge sellers and not the most in demand car out there.
if he can afford newer do that. just like the D1....newer the better.

If he's had Mercedes before, he'll know right away that the M-Class is cheaply-built by comparison. I haven't owned one, but I've read about the ML's quality problems. That said, an ML may be a better choice for daily driving on pavement. Also, I test-drove a 2002 Discovery and a 2002 ML back-to-back, and did think that the Mercedes had a small edge in terms of smoove and eazy luxo driving.

Good point Jack, I may have to resign to the fact that he's happy with those! Ugh...no Range Rover for me! :-) It's funny, when it comes to a Luxury car, he's very picky about build quality, etc...but then he will just drive a DODGE CARAVAN! Guess it's all in the expectation. He said he's had enough 'cool' cars in his lifetime!
Thanks for everyone's suggestions/opinions.

We looked at the MBenz ML when we decided to go with another Rover. I really liked it, and it was very comfortable. I can see how some of the interior bits may be cheaply put together though, but I can put up with things like that. I own a Rover! I did quite a bit of research on the net and found alot of unhappy people with the MBenz. It didn't get too many rave reviews. Remember, it is built in Alabama:-) Later.. RS

I had one of the first ML320 in Austin. I, for one, never had a problem. But here is a good article on comparison.
