Would you be so kind as to help me with this? I would value any number of responses as I have been shopping for 5 months now. My wife and I are looking at spending under 40K and we love the look and interior and the ride of the RR. With the price we want to spend that puts us at the cost of a '01 RR. On-the-other-hand, for that money we could get a new Discovery. It would mostly be used for on road driving and some long trips. I would also like to join your club and go on some of the off road trips. I like the fact that the RR is comfortable and if needed, can drive up a tree. In addition, do they really break down often? Could you please give me your input?

Colin, I own a 96 Disco and a I just bought a 99 RR 4.6. I paid $19,000 for the RR and I $3,000 getting new tires and fixing everything that needed it. In my ecperience the trucks have never broken down. I have never been left stranded. However, do they have things that go wrong more then any vehicle I ever owned - absolutely! Now the newer RR is more reliable then the older ones but they still have a lot of things that can go wrong. They are still over-engineered. Also, you might be hard pressed to find some guys willing to take a $40,000 vehicle off road that is going to drive it mostly on the road. I say go to autotrader.com or ebay. Find yourself a RR 4.6 that is in real good shape with about 60K miles on it. Find something with all the service records. I don't believe there is that much difference between the 99-01. Have it preinspected by a Rover shop. Believe me you will have much more fun off road on a truck that you paid $25,000 for then $40,000. |

For $40k you can have the best of both worlds. Spend $30k on a well maintained disco2 or range rover for on road adventures. Better yet, get a real road car like a BMW 330i. There's plenty of 330i's in the $30k range now. For the off road car, spend $5k on a rover classic. Hearing terms like 'lost a fender' while off roading a $40k car is heart wrenching. You also get to pilot a purpose built off road vehicle with a heritage that can depreciate no more than $5k. |

I would go for the RR 2001 if you can, but I think that 40K is a little too high. you are probably talking about the HSE 4.6 with low mileage. Rob is right, get it with 30-50k miles, at that point most the bugs have been cleared. I have a disco II right now and I am looking into buying a RR too. mainly because the softer ride it provides. I am looking around because with the new RR, the depreciation value took a big hit. shop around and you will find your vehicle for less than 40k. my two cents |

Keep in mind that the '03 and later Discoveries come with free scheduled maintenance. Also, except for the RR's air suspension, the '01 Range Rover and '03 Discovery are mechanically extremely similar. Both have the 4.6 liter V8, for example, and share most suspension parts. |
