hey everyone, I can't get the NEW serpentine belt over the alternator pully. I was able to get the old one back last time I replaced the alternator but I guess new one is a bit smaller. I can't seem to move the tensioner enough to clear the pully. How do the pros move that spring loaded thing enough to get it to clear. (the woman is pissed at me for missing dinner so please hurry)

Thanks,
-B-

Well, I had my brother in law levering the tensioner with a crow bar whilst I shimmied the belt on. Get your wife to give you hand.

I used a vise grip clamped VERY tight so as not to slip off and break the fan blades and a hollow "cheater" pipe. Worked well.

Is the belt for the 95 serpentine different to the 96 and laters?
I know the alternators have different pulley sizes but never looked into the belt part of the puzzle.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I'm going to give it a shot with the crow bar in a bit. I'll let you know what happens (or doesn't for that matter).

Just get a serpentine belt tensioner tool. It's simply a thin, long piece of steel that you attach a socket to. Works great. Inexpensive and the proper way to do the job.

I put a wrench on the tensioner, looped a strap wrench around the wrench, braced against the fender and pulled like mad. Worked fairly well.

I found in a pinch that the long hollow handle of your trolley jack works well.

How in the world do you get the belt between the waterpump and the pulley directly above, howevever? Seems to be too tight of a fit to wedge it in.

Just get yourself a large wrench and get someone to help you hold the serpentine pulley down while you get the belt over the alternator. New belts are a bit shorter than the old ones because the old ones have been expanded by the system. I was able to get my new one on with the help of an extra person, and even then it was a really tight fit.

Are you sure you got the right belt and that it's routed correctly ??
