Hey fellas, sometimes my shifter gets stuck in park. If I try long enough and kind of pull up and away, I can get the shifter to go into gear. Any idea what this is? Last time this happened to my parents which kind of freaked out. Thanks! |

This does happen and needs repairing promptly! As a temporary measure until you can get it fixed, with the engine off and key out of the ignition, swap the two terminals closest to the hinges on the rear door. One controls the Heated rear window, the other the hi mounted brake light. By switching on the HRW you provide power to the brake light in the rear door, and release the brake/shifter interlock. Have to be honest, I gave my truck to my garage and said FIX this problem...chances are its a bad relay |

Could also be #1 fuse or could be the shift lock solinoid. |

Does the shifter feel normal? Is there resistance when you push the button on the side of the shifter (to release the lock). If not, pry up the plastic cover on the top of the shifter and make sure the cable is still attached. There is supposed to be a retaining clip holding it in place. Are your brake lights working when it gets locked in Park? If not the switch on your brake pedal is bad. There is more information on this in the archives, but Chris summarized it just fine. Thanks, Mike B. |

Two things, Eric: (1) Check that retaining clip inside the shifter -- mine slipped out, jammed, and left me stuck in reverse (2) You can disconnect the shift lever from the transmission linkage -- there's a cotter pin holding the linkage together on the left side of the transmission. If you remove this cotter you can free up the movement. This is more useful if you're stuck in something other than Park. My guess is it's the solenoid, which is more involved than I can help you with. |

Thanks guys i'll check out your suggestions. I took a look inside the shifter before via someone elses suggestion, but I had no idea what I was looking for, so that didn't help. I'll take a look again. Thanks for all your suggestions! Eric |

Open the top of the shifter and see if a metal clip has fallen off of the crome pin at the top. Shyould be fairly obvious if you also pusyh the button on the side of the shifter.` |

Yeah -- if there is no button movement or the button moves "too easily" I'd bet it's that stupid clip. Cost me 3 hours in a gas station parking lot in Breckenridge instead of 8 hours on the trail...

I had this happen to me on a boat ramp when we were launching our boat. I went to pull the trailer up and I couldn't get out of park. Ended up being the brake light fuse, but since yours only happens occasionally, I'd have to go with the brake light switch. |

Had this happin to me three times, the damn clip pops off at the worst time, ie. when I'm backing out of a driveway or shifting into higher gears after coming off a hill. I have had to get my pocket knife out and pry the pin up to get the retainer clip on...my question, how can I keep it on? I'm always waiting for the "next time" for it to happin again , help.
