Just wondering, 96 d1. I am gonna drain the oil there. I think that it takes 6 litres? Am i right? I am not mechanically inclined, getting there though. SO i drain the oil out. By taking the drain plug out. Which is under the engine. Take oil filter off, pour a little oil in the new one. Put that back on and then put 6 litres of oil in it? Someone correct me if i am wrong please.
Thanks
Sean

6 quarts will do just fine

All sounds good - just quarts instead of liters - though a liter is only a touch less than a US quart (not sure where in the world you may be)

Just put a little fresh oil on the new filter gasket before installing. Don't overtorque the drain plug (takes 1-1/8" wrench)

I'm sure someone will chime in with that "oil pump can lose it's prime" crap - don't listen.

Bill

thanks bill.

One more stupid question. I am out there right now doing it. The oil filter is on the right side. Is the drain plug on the left side right on the side of the oil pan? I am in Alberta.
Thanks again
Sean

If you're underneath your truck, feet pointed towards the front the drain plug is on the left side or on the drivers side if that's easier.

Make sure you drain all the oil first. Then when all the oil is drain. Dont remove the oil filter yet. Put 5 quarts first. Now you can remove the filter. Put fresh oil in the filter. Also put some oil around the filter gasket. Dont forget to check the dip stick.

It's fine to prefill the filter (i do) - but it's this ever-circulating Rover myth that you have can't drop the filter and drain the oil at the same time that bugs the crap out of me. Not sure how it got started, but it just won't die...

Rover tech i spoke with said it can happen but would take something like overnight to lose the prime. So draining oil and pulling the filter at the same time is acceptable as long as you don't leave it too long. The owners manual however states specifically to drain/refill with 5 quarts and then replace filter with some oil already in the filter. Of course swab the seal on the filter with fresh oil. I don't think its bunk but people are probably overly cautious. I would err on the side of caution.

Bluesman,

Can you explain what "lose the prime" means. I have been changing the oil on all my cars the same way since I was 16 and have never had a problem with any car. Drain oil then change filter, then refill with 5 or 6 quarts depending on the car. But, maybe I don't know what I'm looking or listening for, knocks or pings from the motor?

Regards,

Gerry

Losing prime is only a problem for the non-serpentine belt, "v-belt" engines (< '94 model year). The serpentine belt front cover has an integrated oil pump that is a different design than the sixties style side mount on the older engines. The new design has eliminated the priming issue to my knowledge.

On the older engine the manual talks about filling the filter with oil to prevent air locks or packing the pump with petroleum jelly is required - in other words, losing the prime is a possibility. I believe there was a tsb saying fill crankcase first before removing filter.

My 95 takes 7 quarts. And I always drain the sump and filter together. DOnt forget to use a new washer on the drain plug.

yes Geoff is correct

My owners manual states to drain and refill crankcase before removing the filter - hence .... that's why i do it.
