Well, what do you guys do to prepare the Lucas electronics for a hood level crossing through water? Say we already have the snorkel and the breather hoses extended, What about the Ignition system. Does anybody have any good tips on how to prepare you engine compartment before taking the dive?

No expert here for certain - the most I've done is to fill every electrical connector and spark plug boot with di-electric grease - ECU also.

So far - so good

Also depends on what year truck - distributor or GEMS and location of ECU varies - 97 and up ECU is fairly vulnerable to water since it's under the hood.

Justin

You should also consider what is going to happen to the vehicle interior when you stop moving in the middle of that river. Chances of flooding increase with the depth of the water.

Check out the August issue of LRO. They have a nice bit on water proofing a rover as well as a heart pumping article on the royal marines' landing craft defender plowing through over the hood sea water!

I heard that some Jeep guys use the cheapest hair spray you can find and spray down some of the electronics. Di-electric grease sounds like a must. Any other good ideas or articles? I'll be checking out the article in LRO, Thanks Brent

Yeah and a bit of aftershave does wonders too. It won't help you get through the swamp mud, but by christ you won't smell so bad afterwards!

Barbie uses a lot of hair spray before riding in her pink jeep.

At what point does a rover start floating and lose traction? (Assuming one has the windows rolled up).

Maybe smelling good on the trail isn't such a bad idea.

I was just curious what the url for land rover online magazine was. I searched google, and the resources section of discoweb and could not find it.

Gettingbetter sez that cheap hairspray works...indeed, it does. It is basically lacquer. Gunk makes a "plastic ignition spray sealer" that I have used and it works well. Mind you, this is for splash and spray, not total immersion.

I've gotten the bow wave lapping at the edge of the hood on a couple of crossings. This was on a good clear river with a cobble bottom and no suck holes to drown in. With the under-hood GEMS unit, anything much deeper than wheel-deep risks major damage. If you stall out, do not risk a restart...a hydrolocked engine is not a pretty sight.

That said, there are a few things you can do. One is to position a tarp to keep water from flowing through the radiator. Bungee it in place for the crossing. The other is to use good technique, that is, the formation of a proper bow wave. You go just fast enough to build up a good wave, which causes a cavity to be created a few feet back - where your engine is.

Or, you could save up for a TDi!

Happy sailing

Are there any good companies that will do a petrol to TDI swap. Does anybody know pricing or web sites to check out?
