Ok typical day with my 95 D1... The car always takes a while to start and once it starts in the morning u get a big cloud of white smoke, and a funny smell. But recently the past week or so.. the car had been starting slow..almost like the battery was low however the battery wasnt cuz when i got it tested it was fine, plus all my electronic stuff works when i turn the key. This morning I go to start it.. it cranks slow for like 2 seconds then it is dead (click click click click).. so I was like shit.. maybe my alternator is not charging my battery (new alternator just replaced in may). So I tried to jump the car and that didnt work. I took the battery from my pickup truck and put it in the car.. same thing just click click click.. so I was like maybe my starter is bad... I then got out the truck and I saw a cloud of smoke coming from my starter. Does that mean my starter is done?? or is it the solonoid?? The car wont start and wont even turn over anymore.. however all my electronic work (headlights, stereo, etc.).

Yep - if you saw smoke from your starter, it's had it. Could be either starter or solenoid - hard to tell until you get into it.

When you tear it apart - also check battery cable and connectors - you might have some corrosion and high resistance issues contributing to the problem.

well i pulled out the starter... Its real tight in there... but once i got the right alen key size it wasnt to bad.. my rover shop manual says to remove exhaust heat reflector from the downpipe.. i decided to just take it out without doing that and it worked fine.. Now does anyone know any napa part numbers for starter?? Or any other non landrover starter that will fit in there??

Thanks,
Rich

I would have the started rebuilt by someone... also pay very close attention to the cables that attach to the starter. It is very common for these wires to fail.. this might be your only problem but since its already out, you can get it checked out by any good electric rebuilder.
