One of the cooling fans in my 98 D1 is not coming on and my viscous coupling has failed. I plan to replace the viscous coupling in the morning.

Do you think a Disco can make it from Florida to the TN Adventure Rally and back on only 1 cooling fan? How big of a job is it to replace the fan?

Thanks,
Mike B.

Mike

The condition of your radiator is probably the most important factor. I haven't had aux fans on my truck for 4 years, and it has not even started to overheat. But I am anal about cooling system maintanance.

If your belt driven fan is working with the new viscous, all should be fine. Also you can remove the thermostat to get a lot more flow thru the radiator as a temporary fix.

I ran my truck with only one fan for a year and it all worked fine, but just recently I blew my coolant expansion tank and my viscous coupling went caput! Did it have anything to do with the electric fan? I don't know but if I were you I would go get one and replace it just to be safe. I bought mine from a junk yard for $100.00, easy to swap out!!

Mike, get ahold of Robert at www.roverlandparts.com down there in FL. I'm not sure where you are in FL but perhaps you could pick one up from him before your trip up just in case. And I've got a viscous clutch here in Knoxville, TN just laying in my garage if you haven't gotten one yet.

Thanks all.

I checked the radiator and found that it was blocked by mud and debris. I changed the visc. fan clutch and cleaned out the radiator fins. I made the trip from Florida to the Tennessee Adventure Rally just fine. I'll definately check with Robert on a used fan.

By the way, the TN Adventure Rally was a total blast!

Thanks,
Mike B.
