Just wrote it tonight after seeing the new Disco for 2005. I just had to write them. It was the only right thing to do.

Ok.. I hope you can take this message in a positive light because I think it is really worth reading. First I want to say that I really like Land Rover, and I, like so many others that have bought one really love the fact that its the only SUV that was actually designed to go off road. Now in the interest of all the Land Rover fans that are to lazy to actually write to you, let me say that the Discovery 3 is absolutely horrible looking. Im just trying to give you some honest feedback. These are the same feeling that everyone Ive talked to has expressed. Why does everything have to be so square, So angualar.. So flat. It looks like, and believe me, I hate to say it ... but a Honda Element. I am proud to be an American, but please dont tell me that Ford is taking over the Land Rover design team.. because I can only see disaster in the future of such change. Lets just put it this way. American cars arent exactly known for their amazing design work. Just look at the new Hummer 2, What 16 year old designed that piece of garbage.
Anyway, Im writing because I care, because I feel like a letter like this can only help. Sometimes its really helpful to get outside feelings on stuff. Hell look at how fast they redesigned the front of the BMW 7 series. Because Bangle was getting his head handed to him.
Please dont follow everyone elses Cheap Battlestar Galactica look. It really doesnt speak of the quality and tradition of the name Land Rover. Remember, you dont have to make changes just for change sake, and you dont have to make new designs look so "Futuristic" Because that look gets tired very quickly and looks like something from 1987. The 2004 Freelander looks very nice, so what happened to Discovery?

Please feel free to write me back if you want.

Jeff.

Congrats on speaking your mind, but rovers have always had a boxy look with flat sides, until the freelander and the new RR, but i think it is still fugly.

Yeah, I wouldn't necessarily call land rover's design philosophy as "flowing and sexy" as opposed to "slab sided and tall" :-)

IIRC I heard that the series III will not be explorer based but rather rangie based. If so, then it won't be a bad rig.

This is what they'll say: " Dear sir, we really appreciate your feedback. The new design is actually keeping up with the latest trends...latest technoglogy.....blah blah blah. We are really proud of our design. We feel these changes will improve the look and handling as well as promote the status the Landrover name has to offer. "

What they think: We have a business to run and we need to sell cars. Our bottom line is going to look good this year. We are going to sell the shit out of the new discovery. At a better profit! More dividends, higher stock prices, we are going to be mega rich! Oh well, you can't please everybody.

Not trying to bust your bubble, just trying to shed some light!

How about them all sharing the same underpinnings?
BTW, I have no gripes with Ford's engineering; for instance, they introduced the nearly only long-travel independent suspension (TTB). Despite all the issues it had, it was quite a feat. I have no doubt Ford can produce a kick-ass design - the real question is whether it ever will.
...I wonder how a D130 would fare on a Super-Duty chassis.

They'll need to offer chrome 22" dubs standard if they really want it to sell. And it WILL sell, I'm guessing, especially here in California where everyone wants to look like a pimp or hip-hop playa.

Jeff,

No offense, but if I worked at LR and received your email I would just send you a canned response and toss it. That's probably what they will do.

I think you may get a little more respect from them with a well written, professional letter. Approach it from the standpoint of what things you would like to see them continue to incorporate into their design. Maybe mention things like solid axles, CDL, etc.

Keep in mind that someone that has no real control over the design or direction of the company is going to be receiving your letter/email. Out of the thousands of correspondence they receive each day, they are going to only be relaying a few of the overall sentiments to management......... I would guess.

After reading your email, I'm not sure what type of response you are trying to elicit. I mean, step out of yourself and try to respond to your own email. It is like one big ramble of thought process. So, I doubt you are going to get much of a reply from them.

I think a letter like this probably hurts the cause more than helps, but what do I know.

Anyway, that's just my opinion on your email/letter to LR.

Your email to them is indeed too casual as Greg mentioned and is merely your feelings. To be taken seriously you should not use any kind of foul language and you should use proper letter form, grammar and punctuation. In addition you should never negatively critique like using words such as horrible.

However it really doesn't matter. Since they will not give a crap what one rover dude from discoweb says.

There is no doubt that LR has thought out significantly all of the design changes that have been made to all of their vehicles. They have spent a lot of money and resources doing this. Likely more resources than what we all cummulatively have on discoweb. In the end all of this research, redesign and what have you has resulted in the what you are seeing in the rover line of products and they believe that these design changes are in the best interests of the company financially, afterall if they don't make money none of them will have jobs.

So much time, resources and money have been spent on their efforts that no matter what, the comments of a few people will not change a darned thing. Now if they did a survey and every soccermom interviewed said what you said. THAT might matter, but I am pretty sure that they have done this already.
