I recently purchased a 02 Disco II with 21k on it. After a couple of oil changes its due for the 30k service. After finding out that my friendly dealer wants $564 for this service, I thought I would tap into this fountain of wisdom and see if anyone would be so kind as to tell me what this service involves so that I can do it myself. Also, if anyone has a good source for genuine shop /service manuals I would also greatly appreciate that. Thank for the help...

Pretty sure your owners manual shows the list of work to be done.. if not.. just ask your dealer exactly what he does for the $564.. and do it yourself...

The extended warranty and an executive package or something like that came with my DII. every recomended dealer service is covered including oil changes. SAVEs lots of $$. The service w/out the package was around 5 to 6 hundred though.

Nathan

Ask your dealer what you get for $564, my D2 30k service cost $365 in Arizona. Parts were $200, $150 labor, and $15 for hazardous waste.

Yeah, in SW Florida, the price ranges from $496 to around $800 depending on what town you go to for the service.

If I recall, on the 30k they will:

CHANGE TRANS FLUID & FILTER
CHANGE DIFF FLUID
CHANGE TRANS CASE FLUID
CHANGE ENGINE OIL, FILTER & WASHER
CHANGE SPARK PLUGS
CHANGE BRAKE FLUID
CHANGE ENGINE COOLANT
CHANGE AIR FILTER
LUBRICATE DRIVE SHAFT & U-JOINTS
ADD LR FUEL CONDITIONER
LUBRICATE DOOR LOCKS, HOOD LATCH, FUEL DOOR HINGES

and, they will inspect:

INSPECT WIPER BLADES
PARKING BRAKE
SEAT BELTS
COOLANT HOSES
RADIATOR & AC CONDENSER
BATTERY
SERPENTINE DRIVE BELT
EXHAUST SYSTEM & HEAT SHIELDS
TIRES
BRAKE LINES
BRAKE PADS, CALIPERS & DISCS
STEERING RODS, JOINTS & DUST COVERS
SHOCK ABSORBERS
SUSPENSION LINKS & MOUNTINGS
WHEEL SPEED SENSOR WIRING
FUEL LINES

And, they will record the performance of the service in your manual.

Also, they will charge you for parts, labor and anything that their inspection deems needs to be repaired, if you want them to repair it.

However, I could have missed something above.

thanks guys....after stopping by the dealer (Denver), I found out that I was missing my "Passport to Service" part of the manual. Sure enough, its all listed. After finding out all that's involved is basic fluid changes, I'll be saving my $$ for more important items (rims and tires). Thanks again for all the input.

actually there is one other thing....by doing the scheduled maintenence myself will i be voiding the warranty? This is my first Land Rover, and one of the main reasons i bought this particular one was because of the extended warranty. I seem to remember reading something like anyone can perform the service as long as they use certified parts. Its still got 32,000 on the warranty, so I'd rather not void it just yet.

I just went through this same process. I bought a used Disco II last October and immediately had the 30k done at an indie shop ('bout $600). They couldn't do one of the fluid changes because of a proprietary Rover tool (can't remember if it was the transmission or something else). At any rate, I was going to have to take it to the dealer for service. When I took it in, I found out that the original owner had bought the extended service package and the 30k service would be covered under that plan. Basically my car got two 30k services. Have the dealer check that for you.
