Well, my father in law just purchased a boat from a guy he knew, that needed the thing out of his slip this weekend. He got a killer deal, BUT of course the catch is it had to be out this weekend This leaves no time to get the trailer, so we figured we would motor it back from Cape Cod to Newport RI. Not a bad distance i suppose, and we have all day. The boat is a 27 foot something-or-other...twin screw. We have both driven boats before, but never through channels, open ocean etc. Ive been looking online for webisites about the "rules of the road" etc, and im headed to west marine to pick up all the necessary safety gear we need to be USCG complaint. The boat is fully operational, fully inspected last week so we are not concerned with it not functioning properly, but more so we dont over look the obviouse Just thought I would throw it out there, see if anyone had suggestions, knew of sites to get info etc Much thanks J |

Weather weather weather........... Keep a close eye on it and even more so the sea forecast (wind direction , waves , etc.) http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/Maps/Northeast.shtml wave conditions will probably be your largest limiting factor. On a 27' boat 3 foot waves will keep you at a slow pace 4 feet or more I would strongly consider not making the voyage with a new skipper. I am not at all farmiliar with the area you plan on navigating, that being said common sense will be your best tool. Maybe you could poke around at the docks and see if there is a skipper you could hire for the trip. Then you can take your time to get comfortable with your new vessel before making a longer trip. Any idea how many miles the trip is you need to make ??? Peter |

josh don't forget to rent Caddy Shack the day before you head off on your trip. you and Rodney Dangerfield have a striking similarity. "you scratched my anchor!" |

Hey Joshua Let us know how the trip goes. Take at least a hand held VHF radio if the boat dosen't already have one. Channels 16 , 9 to call coast guard for help. Rememver "Mayday" is for life and death situations "Pan-Pan" is a more general Help call. Be safe , good luck. Peter |
