Greeting all, Let me first start off by thanking you all for this forum. I have always wanted a LandRover.

I think I might be one step closer to owning a 1996 Discovery SE7. I have several concerns. The truck in question has 125,000 miles. The ABS light is on, The check engine light is on. There is an exhaust leak coming from near the engine. Theres a slight miss in the engine. Now the good stuff. NO dents, and the leather interior has no cracks even on the drivers seat. My uncle got the truck as a trade in at his Ford dealership. He only wants $4500.00 for it. My main concern is what else to look for. Transmission concerns, brakes, heating and cooling? I think I have exceptional vehicle repair skills, and I think I might be able to get this Disco back into shape.

Also I'll be towing it about 1000 miles. When I remove the rear drive shaft, will the transfluid leak out?

First off, no nead to remove driveshafts (front or rear) to tow. Just put the transfer case in neutral, and the automatic trans shifter in neutral (or manual stick in N). The tcase shifter is the little knob forward of the automatic trans shifter. Then you're totally freewheeling. And no, no fluids will leak out if you pull a driveshaft.

Sounds like you may have a cracked exhaust manifold - common failure. You can have that welded shut. Not too big of a deal, but you have to remove it to weld it. Exhaust leak may also be a bad gasket between the engine manifold & y-pipe (the first leg of the catalytic exhaust system). Or maybe as simple as loose y-pipe bolts (there's 3 bolts on each side, with the gasket in between).

ABS light may be as simple as a poorly seated ABS sensor above the hub. May be a bad sensor. I don't know the cost of a new sensor off-hand, probably a hundred bucks or so.

Check engine light may be bad O2 sensors, or a variety of other things. But the slight miss in the engine sounds like maybe more is wrong. You might want to have it inspected by a foreign car mechanic familiar with Rovers. A Rover dealer can also inspect, but their recommended repairs may well exceed the $4500 asking price! The engine will throw a code that can be read with the proper equipment. Your uncle's dealership may be able to diagnose it for you. Post the code here on dweb and someone will tell you what it means.

125,000 miles isn't bad. The price is OK for the mileage & issues, especially if you can determine that the issues are really relatively minor. But if you end up needing a valve job, there's half the sticker price right there. Hope this helps, good luck, and welcome to dweb.
