I lost one of my original LR keys, so what do I do? I just get a copy made of the other original key. The copy worked fine in the doors, slid fine in to the ignition, and it slide fine to start and run. So I stop and try to get the key out. Won't budge into the lock position. I push in and try to turn as hard as I can nothing. So after swearing and cursing I come read this board. It says thats it probably the park lock with the transmission. So I carefully start fidling with that, however, everytime I push the button in I can actually hear it clicking in the ignition column. So its not that. I pulled the #12 and #13 fuses. No go. I disconnect the battery, no go. Somehow I think there is something with this "COPY" that will cause it not to turn. I do not think it is brake switch or parking switch related. WTF can I do? I'm afraid if I have it "drilled out" or something I'll never get the original key to work in it. Help please i beg

Try spraying lots and lots of graphite powder in there. I'm sure it will be messy since you can't get the key out, but perhaps it just needs a little lube. I would suggest going to the dealer to get a new key cut next time, they do it from your VIN number. Good luck to you.. RS |

It's not electrical. Most likely, the key was cut slightly off causing the cylinder to jam internally. Email me if you need to take the cylinder apart and I can tell you how, it's really easy. |

The same thing happened to me when I had a new key made at the local hardware store. Local stores do not stock the correct key blanks, but they do have blanks that are very close. It would go in, start the rover, but would not come out. The key blank was too short and would not allow me to push-in the key to get it out of the ign. switch. I got a dremel tool with a thin cut off wheel and removed the head of the key right there in the ign. switch. BE CAREFUL !! you must leave enough key stem to grab with pliers, push in and turn back to remove. This wasn't hard, took 5 minutes, but I learned a lesson: buy genuine key blanks. I got 2 from rover connection for $7 each, had a local store cut them, works great. Mike |

Thanks guys. That was it. It was too short. Fortunately I didn't break anything before reading this.
