1998 Disco 1 80k miles I have been experiencing a stumbling/erratic idle when stopped. I looked over the engine and after a little searching, I found that one of the hoses that goes from the Plenum(?) into the valve cover on the passanger side of the engine is brittle and has a nice leak. For my own understanding, what does this hose do, and do you think its leaking could be related to the poor idle? Thank you for your time, Brian

Answer: highly likely. Even the tiniest leak can cause a problem when you are idling. There is probably an emissions hose kit available from the major LR parts dealers. You will need to take the tin can off the valve cover and clean the inside too. Randall For all the small vacuum hoses you can just snip the ends off and reuse or replace them youself. No need to buy LR parts for the small hoses. |

Yes - it could - it scavenges crankcase vapors and feeds them into the engine to be burned. Regardless, any type of vacuum leak can contribute to poor idle. Bill |

Thank you for all your help! Do you think this is just a generic diameter hose I can get at my local autoshop store or do I need to get a land rover part? |

Brian, When my hose cracked, I went to the dealer since the diameter of the plenum and the crankcase are different. You can rig a hose but I bet the pressure will finally win-out. |

i've heard a test is to let the truck idle and spray starter fluid around the vac- hoses (in moderation) if there is a crack in the hose it might be big enough to swallow some of the starter fluid and you will hear a quick searge in the engine. you might try this if your visual inspection of the vac-hoses comes up empty. i've never tried so let me know if it works. rd |

Many of the vacum hoses on my '94 D1 became brittle and cracked... I started snipping off the brittle ends and reusing them, till they became to short. Eventually had to replace most of them. Stiff polyethelene tubing can be used as a "connector" to avoid having to replace hard-to-reach vac lines. |

I have a 97 disco. On the passenger side valve cover is a little hose that goes to the plenum. If you pull the hose off the valve cover, there is a little plastic rod sticking up. This is the top of a little device that is jammed in the tube in order to prevent oil from going into the plenum, but yet allow gases from the crankcase into the plenum. When this little device gets clogged, the idle can be erratic. My idle would go from 1800 rpms to 700 and back in a totally unpredictable way. Mine was so clogged that the vaccum from the plenum was sucking the hose flat at the valve cover. I cleaned it by pulling it straight out with a pair of pliers, then spraying it with carb cleaner. Once I jammed it back in place, and reconnected the hose, the idle calmed down. I hope it stays that way. |
