Can anybody send me a pic of how to mount a canoe on a stock Disco roof rack? Thanks!

This is for a kayak but its pretty cool. Just thought I through it out there.

I've never done it but I would imagine you could just buy those foam protectors for the rails

or

and strap it down front and back like this

i would not consider strapping a canoe to a stock rack. have to get some thule or yakima bars to make that happen.

Sus,
I've got a Dagger Legend 16 that I carry on my D2 w/ factory rails and Yakima cross bars. I also have the Yakima gunnel brackets, which attach to the cross bars and add a little more stability and security. I secure the canoe to the cross bars with a Yakima strap that has a cam buckle, which makes cinching it tight a snap. Then, I secure the bow and stern, using the tow ring in the front, and hitch in the back. If you have some free time, Pro Canoe and Kayak is about 2 hrs south of you in Greensboro, NC on Lee Street. They carry a good selection of Yakima parts, they'll install it and being a paddle store - show you how to secure the canoe.
Sorry I don't have any pictures of mine on the Disco, but other than lifting the boat so high, securing a canoe on a Disco with the factory bars is similar to what you would encounter on any other vehicle with some type of factory mounted rack. That said, I would avoid any type of foam block / strap combo, where the canoe's weight rests on the roof of the Disco. One - it's not good for the roof, two - there is no way this set-up will hold a canoe in the event of a sudden stop, high cross wind, or even on a rough road.

I've carried a 120lb boat (read boat, not canoe) on the stock roof rails. I installed the crossbars and then I attached long pieces of 2x4 to the crossbars and sat the boat on that. I have a brush bar so I strapped down the front of the boat onto that and I tied the other end to the hitch. I worked ok, but it was a one time deal and I kept wondering if the roof was going to collapse on my head.

A buddy of mine has those Thule/Yakima rails on his Xterra and they are the best. He can carry 2 canoes with no problems up there. Even putting them up was easy. If you are going to be doing this regularly then I would suggest getting a set.

Make sure you attach bow AND stern lines. On the back I use the hitch and on the front I use my jate ring. Yakima crossbars (or Thule) are definately a stronger option compared to the factory crossbars. If you go with Yakima, you can get the Lowrider towers and 58" crossbars. I have them and love them for carrying anything from surfboards, canoes, multiple kayaks, and my mountian bike. As a side note to anyone who has a Yakima rack that they use to carry canoes/kayaks, they only honor their warranty if you have/keep your reciept of the date you purchased it and if your carrying a boat of some time, you have to use bow and stern lines. Basic 1 inch webbing straps do a great job for securing whatever to your roofrack.

Hey Eric,

I was just looking at the picture you posted above this morning and showing my wife your cool Kayak setup, when a few hours later (around 3:00 pm) I am driving on the access road of Cnetral at Mockingbird and there you are. I thought to myself "why does this LR look familiar?" I then realized it was the Disco with the Kayak setup that I saw on Discoweb and promptly exited on Lovers Lane to see if you were still on the access road, and there you were (I was in the silver Porsche Cayenne).

Question: Does your door open ok with the Kayaks that low? Is the increased width a problem on the highway? Do you paddle on White Rock Lake?

It really was a cool set up, and I'm glad I realized it weas your rig so that I could take a closer look.

Sus-
I've used the Yakima system with the Yakima gunnel brackets for a 16' canoe and they are very secure. I would use ratchet style tie-downs no matter what I used to carry it on. The foam blocks work o.k. but can slide around under some conditions and they will eventually scratch up your finish a bit. If you go the Yakima or Thule route check Ebay, there is always a big parts selection available. Once you own a good multi-sport rack system you will always find ways to use it, it's a good investment.

Sorry guys, I didn't get these messages until after we shipped out for the weekend. I'll show you how we rigged it. It worked fine for the short distance we were traveling (about 10 miles) to our campground and the lake.
