has anyone done a conversion from gas to diesel on a d1 that doesn't cost 15g's. Why hasn't anyone done the conversion since the diesel is tne times better than the rover crap that they but in.

Peter-
While being a mechanical novice at this I will relate what I have learned about the process from researching websites like ECR, Britrest, and some others, as well as following Richard Dekkard's progress of putting in a 2.8l diesel in his Disco.

The fact that a great deal of the components to the engine, like the fuel tank and such, have to be replaced is a major contributor in raising the cost. The entire list of what comes in a 2.8l 'kit' is on the brittanica restorations page and its fairly large, and thus expensive. Couple that with the fact that we're looking at a 200TDI, 300TDI or the 2.8L Powerstroke that are not really conventional engines in the U.S. so you have to deal with getting them here from overseas and such.

Unless you are mechanically inclined the labor can be a killer too so bear that in mind when you consider the why behind the 15k pricetag. Last time I checked it was 10k from Britrest for the kit, slightly lower if you have a manual transmission as no adapter is needed-but labor is on you. Also bear in mind that is the time to do all kinds of other refurbishments b/c everything is coming out and you're already investing a ton of cash in a ride you'd like to have for years to come-so that will raise prices too.

The rule of thumb I have always heard is make an estimate and expect to pay 1.5 to 2x that estimate. Do a search for diesel on the archives and you'll see this issue is discussed at great length, and while optimal it is cost prohibitive compared to the cheaper 'drop-in' nature of a 4.6l or something of the like.

This would be the holy grail of all US rover owners.

At least me.
