Been trying to find out what the LR Baseline Oil Consumption is for a D2. The motor is a 4.0 with 44K on the clock.

The reason is that I have been trying to get my engine fixed since June 11th and the Dealer has me doing an oil consumption analysis by checking the level every 1000 miles. But nobody at LR seems to know or wants to tell me what the baseline oil consumption allowed is. In the last 800 miles the Pig consumed 1.5 quarts (verified by LR) and in the 900 miles before that, it consumed another 1.5 quarts (again verified by LR).

Thanks in advance,

Paul

I don't know what the baseline is but mine uses 1 quart about every 3,000 miles just for reference.

I don't know what the official baseline consumption is, but I do know that, not counting leaks, a quart of oil every 500 miles on an engine with 40,000 miles on it is way too much. I'd make them find out what's causing it. A compression and/or leakdown test might help.

If your engine is burning that much oil, and they are sure that it's not leaking it, it should be taken care of soon before it ruins the catalytic converters. Out of curiosity, what viscosity oil are you running?

I've got an 03 with the 4.6, so it won't help you, but mine is burning about 1/4 to 1/6 a quart every 3000 miles running 10w40.

One quart loss to 5000 miles on my 98 with 86K miles. I run synthetic 15W40 during summer and 10W40 during winter.

I am running 10-30.

I asked about compression checks, boroscoping, and whatever else and they the dealer is is doing the oil consumption thing.

I am still in the warranty, so I have to play the game.

I burnt just over a litre of oil in 1500 kilometres. I have notified the dealer. I suspect however that it is being sucked past the valve guides on my beast and burnt out the arse - because I LOVE TO GET THE FUEL CUT OUT GOING!!! At the end of the day its and old design push rod V8 and will burn it when you get up it.

I burn 1 qt/5000 miles with 152k miles on the odo. And the last owner used to add oil when the oil light would come on. So your's is definitely on the high end.

Up until the 30k oil change, I used 10w40 dino w/ almost no oil consumption between 7500 mile intervals.

At 30K, switched to synthetic Mobil1 5w30 for cross-country trip and used approximately one quart in 5000 miles driving at interstate speeds.

Just changed the oil again at 37.5K and will begin changing every 3500 miles from now on.

Also, as of yet - no leaks.

Paul - that type of consumption seems excessive, has your dealer given you any idea of what they are thinking it may be?

No they haven't Jack.

They have not done anything but oil consumption. I checked with the next closest dealer (134 miles away) and they said the same thing; do the oil consumption check every 1000.

What makes it more maddening is that I have been trying to get the Pig fixed since June 11th and I am still playing the game. To make a long story short:

#1 Take Pig to Dealer.

#3 Dealer SM says Pig motor is bad. LRNA authorizes short block replacement. Authorization # is Vin # (I still have the reciept that says that)

#4 Dealer SM calls, "Paul your short block is here. Come in and get it fixed"

#5 Next day, new SM calls. "Paul you are no longer getting a short block. Old SM no longer works here. Come in for anal oil consumption mileage checks."

And there I am today.

Man, sounds like they're pulling the same shit on you that they did on me up here with my AT. Over nine months between when I started reporting problems (codes popping too) to when they "made me an offer".

Have you called LRNA and logged the issue with a rep?

I have called LRNA and that didn't amount to crap. I have the local reps email address. That might be my next step to take.

That's total bullshit. If LRNA had already authorized a short block, how can this new numbnut SM over-ride a decision that has already been approved?

Meanwhile, the factory warranty is ticking away...

Maybe try and email the GM of the dealership. I've done that with postive results.

Frustrated I am.....

But, In fairness to the new SM, there were some apparent issues with how the old SM was "taking care of busines"...if you know what I mean.

I have 6K to go until the factory warranty expires at 50K. After that I have an extended warranty that lasts to 62K because I bought a CPO from LR. I am going to work with this guy in a civil manner and hopefully we come to a conclusion soon.

Paul,

You gonna bring that oil-burning pig to the work day at Uwharrie on the 20th? The missus tells me that I've been good, so I can go...

Probably not Erik. Work has me traveling a lot to Maryland and back. The 20th I'll be returning from another trip. Right now I plan on attending MAR and hopefully SAE in November.

"oil burning pig" Yep, that's about right.

Erik,

I think there is some type of UWH action that takes place in December. I might be game for that.
