Does anyone know how I can drill holes to attach bracket to where I removed cargo bin? Through the hole on the left, I can feel behind cargo wall and there is a metal bar. Photo with pink tape shows approximate location of the metal bar.

Does anyone know exactly what that metal bar is? CAN I drill thru it to attach bracket? What kind of bit and bit size do I need to put on my drill so that it will drill thru metal? ANY info on doing this would be of great help.

BTW, I marked this little cover with white paper and black arrows pointing to it. What are those things and how do you get them out? I tried popping this particular one out with screwdriver and it won't budge.

Thanks, Jamie

Here is where I want to put bracketPink tape marks apprx location of bar behind bin area. Black arrows on white paper show plastic cap

Jamie, there is a special tool that you can get to pull those things out. The tool is very useful and can pop those "plastic things" out in a heartbeat. The only thing is unless you do that a lot then its not worth doing.

Here is what I suggest, get a slotted screwdriver (i.e. the one you can pry with) and a regular carpenter hammer. Use the screwdriver to help get the claw side of the hammer (the side you use to pull a nail) under the "plastic thing". Then slowly extract the "plastic thing" in a similar fashion as you would a nail.

The "plastic thing" is basically a plastic nail so it doesn't screw in or anything like that.

I hope that helps! Don't worry if you mess it up a little. The mess up very easily but will still work ok.

I can't find a more scientific name for the "plastic thing" but I think you understand!Or at least I hope so.

I call them "plastic thingy's" but grommet sounds more professional. www.Crutchfield.com sells a cheap tool that I'd rather use if I'd never done it before. I believe they call it a panel popper. Good Luck

Any auto parts store sells the panel puller...it is either a flat metal "fork shaped" tool or it looks like a crooked screwdriver with a forked tip. My preference is the latter type as you can twist and torque it to pop the plastic plug loose. Total cost is $7 for either tool.

Hey Jamie you dont need to bolt the back in my opinion. Mine isnt with a 15lb bottle. and its been through a good amount of good steep and bouncing trails.

I put a steel plate on the bottle of the body for extra support and bolted just down to it.

John and Drew,

Thank you for correcting me on that one. Yes, a panel puller is what you need for this job. That is what LR mechanics use to pull those things out. It works really well.

Peter,

I've been asking myself the same question - several times a day. Your guess is as good as mine. Multiple Choice:

a) I don't know.
b) Getting ready to see the USA in my truck.
c) Going insane.
d) All of the above.

Peter,
Can you give me some idea as to what the hell that thing is that your sticking in the back end of your Disco ?
I'v seen you guys chatting about wood floors and seen photo's of Engel Fridge's in the back, with this bottle stuck in the corner as you are doing.
If its a Battery for the Engel have any of you Guys thought of putting a second battery in under the bonnet to power the Engel?
We power our Engel's that way down here :-)

Noel, follow this link to find out about Power Tank.

http://www.expeditionexchange.com/powertank/FAQmain.htm

You can get even more info at the same site under "products" then click on "Power Tank"

You can also find info on plywood flooring for cargo area by going to the main page of the same site at http://www.expeditionexchange.com/index.htm then click on the upper right photo choice that says "Engel Slide Lock Installation"

That should answer all of your questions.
Good Luck! Jamie

Hi Jamie,
I just did this same thing two weeks ago with my Power Tank. The metal peice you feel behind the plastic panel is a body brace that runs horizontally to your floor. What I did was trace out the bottom of the power bracket & cut the cubby material with a sharp carpet knife just on the bottom & up the side enough so the power bracket sets flush against the vertical panel & removed that portion of it then bolted through the floor with 5 bolts & siliconed the under sides of them & the bracket is like a rock & looks good. There used to be a good write up in the tech section here before Disco web changed their look on a Disco I so I did a search for it & it is on the other manufactures website here http://www.4wheelair.com/mounting/discomount/discomount.htm
Good luck,
Brian

Thanks Brian!

I just saved that page to my hard drive for further study. I am really laughing about the idea of starting to cut stuff in to my truck too.

Good to know exactly what that peice back there is before I start drilling!

I THINK that a freind has a welder who might be able to fabricate a metal plate for the back and suggested that it have bolt ends welded to it - so that I could just take bolts out and remove bracket whenever I wanted to.

I do have the side cargo nets, so I can complete that idea for sure!!

I sure wish my bin panel had come off as easily as D1 did on that web page - they've sure got some ornery hardware holding them on these days!

One of the challenges to mounting bracket in that area is the angle where side and floor meet. It is greater than 90 degrees. I am guessing that you solved that obstacle by cutting the cubby material??

Thanks again, Jamie

Hey Noel

What tank size do you use?
Would a pony bottle be enough for 265's

Ross, I have 85cuft, 70cuft and a 20 cuft.
I like to use the 20 if I'm just out for a drive on the beach.
But after a beach dive I just use what I had for the dive.
50 bar will inflate heaps of tyers.
