Well, I ran Spring Creek, rated a 7, in my '00 DII and I locked the CDL for the first time and I could tell a difference in the first 10' of the trail. I never would have gotten through the trail without the CDL, and the ETC in combonation also helped at times.

I am very impressed with the capability of it. I mean, I have never driven a DI off road so I guess I didn't know what I was missing. I am happy with its performance, never got stuck and it was a pretty tough trail. Needed rock sliders!

Eric,

That's awesome...I want to do that to my 99 D2.

I haven't installed anything yet to engage it, I just climbed under there and engaged it with a 10mm wrench.

I have run many trails before but without the CDL locked and ETC only. The CDL makes a huge difference.

Eric,

I thought the DIIs don't come with CDL. What gives, I have a 2001 DII, and I thought I only have the ETC option only.

Eric did you break the plastic sills? Was that why you need sliders? :-)

Gerardo, 1999-2001(first half) had the CDL nipple on the transfer case. You just needed to add linkage or other means of locking the CD. You might want to check to see if you have the nipple or not on your transfer case. If you don't then you'll need to either replace the transfer case or rebuild it with a new housing.

Did the '99 D1's have the ETC? I know they came with a CDL lever. Right?

Eric,

Can you post a pic to show where exactly it is located. I went to the area that is designated in my workshop manual, but it's very tight. How did you get a wrench up in there, let alone to turn it?

Eric2,

D1's didn't have ETC. Might be interesting to see if the D2 SLABS would work on the D1 but I don't know what else might be needed.

Gerardo, take a look at the second photo at http://www.discoweb.org/cdlsolenoid/index.htm You can orient yourself by noticing DC Joint of the front drive shaft in the photo.

Eric,

I located my differential lock selector (CDL). Hell of a location, though.

I'm keeping my 2001. It turns out that my 2001 was one of the many, I'm sure, that has the CDL selector lock on the transfer case.

THANKS again Eric, for bringing this to my attention.

During my CDL search I also found my rovers nipples. I massaged them and they perked right up, just like you guys said they would.

Thanks again guys.

Gerry

Gerry,

On the trail, and after the bottom end of your truck is cooking, you might want to remember to bring a long sleeve shirt and a glove.

I learned the hard way in Vermont that a hot truck, and a columbia rain slick don't mix. :-)

Nice big hole in the sleeve of my coat now.

Well, I was there at the Killington event last year. I had fun, but that probably doesn't count as off roading to some people on this board.......

It was more of a social event with a few trails to play on. :-)

Gerardo, no problem. Engage it next time you are on the trail, I'm sure you will notice a difference in the capability.

Calm, no I never broke the sills but came close many times. I got my slider in preperation for tougher trails. SlickRock slider, and they are great!, Thanks Dave Lucas.

Ya I second the glove and sweater or shirt. We stoped at the trail head and let it sit for about 15 min before I climbed under there. It was still a bit hot but not too bad. Did the same at the end. I really need to find a better way of locking the CDL. I can't see buying some $300 kit for it and I don't know if I want to do the D1 lever cause I hear it is a big pain. I just want something I can engage it from outside. I don't mind that. Most trails here in Colorado, unlike Moab, is mostly dirt and boulders and not slick rock so I can have it engaged the whole trail.

Check with Chris Urqueta. He was selling them on here for $60 a while back. A basic mechanical lever that extends out to under the passenger door.

Eric,

You may want to ask Mark (the current owner of my DII) to see how mine was done, it just used a shifter cable and was mounted under the driver side, you had to get out to lock/unlock it, but it worked great and did not cost that much to make.

Best thing about it was you could remove it in about 10 min if you ever had to take it off.

If you are interested I may be able to make one for you if you would like.

Went offroad yest with 2 D1's and a D2 with locking difs and ETC, The D2 did very well with the ETC and no slippage of the tires where we spun in the D1's The D1 with the sway bars disconnected do a whole lot better then the D1 w/o with everything else the same.

On a 2000 D2 when the CDL nut is turned the diff lock light comes on as well as the ETC and ABS light. is that normal? I know the diff lock should come on but not sure about the others. I also heard (possibly wrong) that you shouldn't have the center diff locked and be using the ETC. is this true? aparently people have done it and have had no problems. Thanks for the input!

Tony,
With the Dlls, you must engage the CDL with the engine running, or you will disable the ETC/ABS. SO, if you are going to turn off the engine, disengage the CDL first. When restarting, start the engine first, then engage the CDL. There is a write up on www.disco2.com of how to bypass this trait. BTW, I bought a handle from Chris U. awhile back; it works great.

FYI - I hear that the 2004 D2's will only disable the ABS (not ETC) when the CDL is turned on.

David, not to get off topic but are you able to get to Disco2.com? The site seems like it's been down for some time.

Guys,

2-Wheel Drive or 4x4.

I explained to my dad that my 2001 has a CDL selector switch underneath on top of the output housing. His reply was that the truck is therefore running as a 2x4 because the CDL is not engaged.

He has been a mechanic since his teens, so how can I intelligently explain that the truck is still truly a 4x4 with or without CDL engaged?

What is the real deal?

In addition, why does the workshop manual refer to a "2 wheel rolling road test" when engaging the CDL?

with the center diff unlocked, the d2 is all-wheel drive, meaning any _one_ of the 4 wheels gets power. 2 wheel drive means any one of 2 wheels gets power.
4 wheel drive (locked center diff) means 2 of 4 wheels get power.

read this for a more accurate description: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/four-wheel-drive.htm

I have a few handles left but I'm out of the long brackets. That is not really a problem though since the small bracket works just fine. There are complete dimensions on my website for the handle and its fairly easy to make. I banged one out in an hour for somebody at a trail event using a shelf bracket, a hammer, a file, and an electric drill.

Here is the link:
