Any words of advice here!!!

It's my 99-D1 w/84k miles....

RED "service engine light" came on 300 miles ago on a weekend road trip to upstate NY and wont shut off.....whats the deal?

I had the same thing happen to my 97, the dealer told me it is a service reminder. There is a small electrical box behind the passenger side kick panel. This "box", has a LR sticker on the top side. The sticker covers a couple of little holes. If you insert a small screw driver in the hole, you short the contacts and the red service engine light will go out. Along the wall there are a number of electrical relays and towards the back, but still on the side wall you'll find the box. Mine was light brown color.

to make you go to the dealer and for them to charge you money to turn it off

FYI, mine came on too at around 84K when I was going across country....funny, same as yours....followed the procedures on the above reset instructions and it went off immediately and probably saved myself $500.00....on which I will probably spend on some other Rover Part---Happy Trails, BB
