I have a 1999 Series II. 64,000 miles. I was driving to the beach for a vacation last week and a "chirping" noise starting coming from under the rover. It is not the brakes. Starts when I accelerate and continues to get get louder and quicker as I speed up. Took it to a local shop and they said they can't fix it. They think it is the transmission. shifts seem fine. I think its the drive shaft or a gearbox. Help! just put a new air compressor on the car for $1000. There are no local dealers in our area btw. Help! Thanks, Aubrey

I think drive shaft or UJ may be the issue; this sounds exactly like a thread Paul Morgan started a couple of days ago, wherein his rear UJ on the front shaft started going bad. I can't remember the title of the thread, but he mentioned "chirping", I think.

Take a close look at the front drive shaft as Kent said rear too. Look at all your U-Joints but pay lose attention at the DC joint since they have been known to fail in a grand way. Get it fixed ASAP if it's a U-Joint on your DC joint. Also have you checked your belt?

My friend's 99D2 w/70+k has developed the chirp as well. This is on top a vibration that starts at around 30ish mph and gets worse during acceleration. It's def/probably coming from the front end. I'm pretty sure there are no engine issues. Feels more drivline related. Do 99D2s have a rotoflex? Could this be related? How does a worn/failed roto look? The vibes were first and now the chirp. If a rotoflex issue, could this been changed in a car park or is this a dealership/shop fix?
Thanks all

If it's on the front end it's not the rotoflex as this is only on the rear drive shaft. You can try and remove the front shaft, lock the CDL (since this is a 1999 D2) and drive around to see if the problem is still there.

Sounds like a dry UJ to me. I had one that I'd manage to snap the grease nipple off, and it chirped for about 3000 miles before the joint failed. Also, be carefull touching a worn UJ after a drive as they get very hot.

LOL! Welcome to the club. Mine started that "chirp" at 44K. I crawled under the Pig to check it out and the front driveshaft / aft u-joint was indeed falling apart.

It's at the dealer right now getting some warranty attention.
