I have a 99 D2 with a popping/snapping noise coming from the front end. I managed to trace the problem to the steering box. The main shaft inside the steering box has about a 1/16th of an inch of vertical freeplay.

When I have someone turn the steering wheel back and fourth you can watch the shaft move up and down slightly and make the snapping/popping noise I mentioned above.

I have noticed a slight decrease in steering feel while on the road. I assume the screw on the top side of the steering box is to adjust freeplay. Would this solve my problem? Any advice would be most appreciated.

I just had my steering box replaced (under warranty) at 49,400 miles. I had a groaning noise when turning that to me sounded like the pump, but the dealer checked it out for the 3rd time and decided the steering box needed to be replaced.

So far the noise has not returned.

I will check to see what the "play" and see if I hear any noises.
