bb4wa hooked me up with Boomco for an awesome addition to my organization project. Boomco custom makes Joey Packs. It is a tire cover (even a big size for big tire) that zips open and has pockets to store recovery gear. When zipped open, the outer cover remains attached at the top.

I pulled what I have stored in mine up and hooked the stuff outside of the deep pockets so that you can see what I put in mine. When everything is back down in the pockets, none of it is visible, even when cover is zipped open. When the pack is zipped closed, everything is protected from weather. In the large pocket I carry: ARB 2x30 Recovery Strap, Superwinch Tree Strap, and 40ft (or maybe 50 ft? I forget) extension Blue Diamond Synthetic Winch Line. The lower left pocket carries my block, right lower pocket carries 2 shackles. There is plenty of room to store double that amount in the pockets.

I just LUV this!! If I don't have a designated area for something to be stored in, I am guaranteed to lose it -- so this is going to work great for me. Easy access for recovery equipment!!

Boomco custom makes anything you want on the outside of tire cover, I chose to stick with bb4wa logo, but I was tempted to do something silly in pink. The quality of cover is amazing. Very heavy weight and well constructed. Makes the LR genuine tire covers seem chintzy in comparison. Price was well below $100 including shipping. Delivery took 3 weeks.

No, I'm not concerned about the added weight on my cargo door. For me, this is well worth the added weight!! Joey Pack Zipped OpenJoey Pack Zipped Closed

Jamie,
Don't worry, you can slow down and cruise for a little while. Your place in the discoweb record books for "Most Rapidly Modified Vehicle" is already secure.

good luck and happy trails.

Nice. How does the cooler fit in there?

Jack,

Trust me, I have no interest at all in holding any records, or "keeping up with the Jones's" (is that how that saying goes?). This making rover into battleship is not fun process AT ALL for me.

You can also trust very much in - there is a "method to my madness" (is that how that saying goes?) The war me, my dogs, and our truck fight - is in every way with "time".

Your words "slow down and cruise for a little while" gave me hope for doing just that - after I do the "important stuff".
I'm gonna' start daydreaming about that!! :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Thanks!! :-)

Greg,

The cooler does not fit in the joey pack. I attach that to my rear shackle and just drag it along on the back of my truck. I am thinking that as I become more organized, maybe it will be able to fit in my truck someday...

Jamie, you should take some more pics and post them to a gallery! Make all the women PROUD! (Can you tell I'm jealous?!) :-)

The is sweet. It is good to keep all of the important stuff like that handy instead of under all of your other stuff (like I do).

Very nice. I agree with the others, lets see a gallery! BTW, when is your big trip with Bill Burke out west? It seems like you've got everything together for it!

Have fun!

(1) Does it lock?
(2) Could someone cut through the cover into the pockets?

You really have done a remarkable amount of modification in a very short period of time. Rather than making all the women proud, I would say you make all of us proud!

:-)

Note to self: look for BIG tire-covers that feel lumpy, to get free recovery gear.....

Thanks for the kind compliments. I suppose if I posted gallery photos, maybe I should get a few taken of me sitting in my truck crying when I start breaking things while attempting to fix things. Probably could also get a good one of how I found a solution for working on the back of my truck. I drive down into ditch between my yard and neighbors, get truck just right, and then I just pull stuff I need in a wagon and can just almost walk right into my cargo area. Hmmm... maybe that explains why neighbors aren't talking to me and have been looking at me like I've lost my mind?? Oh well...

I'm sure that if I wanted to, I could easily slip a small lock into the ends of the 2 zippers where they meet. I'll skip that though -- I'd just lose the bloomin' key or forget the combination. Probably best idea to leave it that way - then if someone needed the gear that badly they would not have to cut thru the cover. It would be interesting to see if my bright neon pink shackles would be left behind?? Probably a good thing that I just stocked up on 2 more cans at Home Depot!!

Have you ever noticed how things always work out? In the event that someone did feel the need to "borrow" my recover gear, I'd probably just happen upon them when they got stuck. That might work out really well -- I could just use my gear to pull them out!! :-) :-)

My FireStik bright neon pink antenna arrived today. (that was just too funny that they actually had that color in stock!) Tomorrow I will probably begin to dissasemble my rear door to attempt antenna mount on spare wheel. Good thing I stocked up again on tissues too -- I'll probably need them!!

I had planned to leave for west by next week, but circumstances may force me to postpone my trip for a short period of time. I am trying to remind myself that things always work out and am continuing to prepare whenever I am able to leave - be it next week or next month. I still think a cargo plane would be a very handy off roading accessory.

BTW-
As I keep saying, this off roading business provides endless opportunities to laugh at oneself. When my tire cover arrived, I worked for hours trying to get the tire cover on the bottom of the tire and into the space between the tire and the rear bumper. I finally managed to push the elastic part of the cover into the area behind the tire by using a verticle blind from inside my house. Still no luck getting it on and into that space. I thought that if I could just manage to get behind the spare wheel and tire - maybe I could pull the rest of it in from behind. Since I could not get behind it, I tried 2 bungie cords attached to my roof rack going straight down to the elastic on each side of the tire. No good, I could tell that there was not enough pull at the right angles. It took quite a while for me to get both bungie cords attached to the roof rack and criss-crossed behind each side of the wheel to try to pull cover in. So, I took them off, pulled the wheel cover enough to access lug nuts, and loosened the tire to try the same thing while I was putting some pressure upwards to lift the tire up a bit from the bumper. Still, no go.

At that point, I decided I should stop to rest and regroup while I thought up another "great idea". I opened the cargo door to sit on the back of my truck while resting. It took me a few minutes to notice that I was sitting right where I had been trying to get the cover. Duh... all I had needed to do was to open the bloomin' door to get the tire cover on.

During this entire process, I had pulled my truck just 1/2 way down the ditch nose down so that my spare tire was sticking up just right where I could reach it easily. I think I'm beginning to think that maybe I might know why no one has complained about my sticker covered truck living in my driveway since it won't fit in garage anymore with roof rack on? Maybe my neighbors are afraid of me?

At the very least, I do get to have great fun driving in and out of that ditch everyday. I practice going in and out of it backwards sometimes too. Besides, it also provides some good obstacle course practice - no joke, I tied pink tape on the ends of shovels and I put them in the ground at the sprinker heads so that I don't run over them. I don't leave the shovels out there all day though - I put them back in the garage while my truck is in the ditch for the afternoon. BTW, there is no water in the ditch, it is just grass. It is great entertainment while working on my truck to watch the faces of people as they slow down when they drive by...

I have decided that I really need some snap on tools. Im thinking that I just might make better progress with some really good tools (don't I wish!!) :-) :-) :-)

Jamie, we all know that Craftsman or MAC tools are better than that Snap-On crap.

Oh yes! This pic is from my first day out. I got stuck in the same bloomin' place 3 times that day!! I did not know it was possible to be so incredibly head to toe muddy and dirty and have so much fun at the same time. One day out and I was a gonner. I caught Land Rover disease, I am quite sure it is totally incurable!! :-) :-) :-)

It doesn't leave the driveway much these days, as I am learning the hardway how to disassemble, reassemble, break, and fix things. Dogs and I are getting ready for the big one - I know some of where we are going. As for the rest of the places, I don't know where they are but I know I need to go there!! :-) :-) :-)

Would you believe that I had this pea brain idea when I bought my truck that it would go ANYWHERE just like I bought it? Ha Ha.

Above all, I am a consistent persistent determined nuisance to myself and others - so having sense of humor is critical. I seem to entertain myself quite nicely, when I was in grade school, the neighbors called me Dennis the Menace. As for anyone else, I don't even know how they put up with me - but, if they are ever in trouble and hear me coming in, they know we will be getting back out -- so, I suppose I'm worth all the trouble I cause...

This was my happy and contented engine after it experienced it's first romping in the mud for the day.

This is first time I got stuck in swamp and got winched out. It was so much fun you could never even believe it. The guys I was on trail with were a riot! :-) I got to mow down big brush on my way out. My dogs just sat in rover as patient happy campers no matter where we ended up!!First Engine MudFirst Swamp Winching

Florida:

Ocala National Forest March 2003 for mud

Osceola National Forest April 2003 for swamps

Needless to say, both trips convinced me that mods were needed and that I need driving lessons :-)
