I have a 89 RRC that is like a train to stop. It will stop, however I do not even think I could get the wheels to lock up if I tried. The foot peddle is firm and I have done a master cylinder reservoir repair (it was leaking at the bushings) and bleed all lines. Does the 89 RRC have generally a hard time stopping or any ideas for first place to troubleshoot?

Thanks for your help.

Michael

From your post it seems like this poor stopping is a recent development. My RRC has a braking system almost identical to yours, and I have never thought it needed better brakes. Sorry I can't help more, but you should have excellent braking if all is working correctly.

that's my only guess

Check your power brake vacuum boost to see if working correctly. If OK, then are you using carbon fiber/kevlar pads?

My truck does the same thing. It is a bit hard to stop but I have gotten used to it. My vacuum booster makes a "whoooshing" when you stand next to it while the truck is running. I am pretty sure it is leaking.

I am not sure what brake pads are on it. I have had the RR since Feb. and have only made sure pads were okay. The braking was similar to the way it is now since I purchased it. I will check the vacuum booster and hoses for leaks first. If okay, I will then investigate the calipers.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Is '89 ABS?

If so - is your ABS pump running - if not, you've only got hydraulic force going to one set of pistons on front calipers only - no rear at all and 50% on front.

You also need to realize that an 89 classic is a heavy vehicle. It will never stop like a small suv or car. Meanwhile it should not feel as if the rover stops only because there is some friction on each wheel. The 89's dont have abs, I have and 89 classic and I have only had the wheels lock up maybe once or twice, even then I was darn near standing on the pedal. I live in Las Vegas and when it rains the roads get super slippery due to the oil on the roads even then I have never had the wheels lock up. I would say get everything checked out, make sure nothing is amiss, and if everything is as it should be just get used to the feel of trying to slow down a miniture tank.

i can lock mine up any day of the week if i'm not carefull. there is too much brake and not enough it takes some learing but i love it compared to the ABS dice roll i had in my disco.

Check your calipers, the seals may well have deteriorated. Replacing mine with new loaded ones (check autopartsgiant) made a world of difference along with a complete flush of the system.

My 89 seems to have the same problem. I replaced the calipers. How do you check the brake booster? I could not stop the truck when I had a trailer on it. I had to use the emrgency brake. It was probably 10,000 lbs ,but it should be able to stop.

how to test your brakes:

Put a trailer with 10,000 lbs on your hitch and drive down the biggest mountain you can find. Make sure that it is one of those mountains with the emergency truck exits.

recently have had new DBA rotors with LR pads and a new master brake booster installed. as RD has mentioned, there is way too much brake if you're not careful. the brakes are incredible. my RR fully loaded (and thats alot of stuff) stops in a very controlled manner and now without any fade no matter how long the decent.

can't help you with solving the problem, however, your brakes should work much better than they are now.

I was not on the road with the trailer. I use a 1 ton GMC for that. I was going about 1 mph in a driveway on a slight decline with the transfer case in low and I could not stop with both feet on the brake pedal. Does anyone know how to check the brake booster?
