I'm in the process of replacing the front bumper on my 99 DiscoII. In the stock configuration, there's a bar that runs laterally across the front of the truck, just beneath the air scoop, concealed by the lower portion of the bumper. The bar attaches with 4 bolts to the frame, near the crush cans. What is the purpose of this bar? It seems to be the lowest clearance point in the front. Is this typically removed in an ARB bullbar setup? What about the air scoop? Is that vital to engine cooling, or can it be ditched? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim O. 99 DiscoII |

Jim, take it off. You won't miss it, and it will help with your approach angle. I'm pretty sure that it comes off w/ ARB bar installs. |

I kept it on. With an ARB install that bar will be the least of your worries and may offer some extra protection. It won't impact your approach angle if the bumper you're installing is an ARB. |

Thanks for the info. I'd like to go the ARB route, but I can't do it anytime soon ($). I'd want to upgrade the front suspension at the same time. I'm just not ready. I did manage to pick up a saudi-style bumper cheap, though ($150). It will give much better clearance in front of the wheels, but still has the lower section in the center, that frames the air scoop and the crossmember I mentioned. I'm considering removing the bar and scoop and then trimming the bumper. Has anyone that's removed the airscoop experienced engine overheating issues? Thanks.
