One of my swivel balls on a '95 is leaking at the top. I have had them leak down but never up towards the ABS sensor. Is something else leaking and it just looks like the swivel balls???

Your help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
- Jay -

a leak from the ABS sensor can be an indication of worse things going on (or not also)

1) Can just be a leaking oil seal that the sensor seats into - easy to fix

2) Can also be indication of a very worn top swivel pin bushing - recently had this on the wife's RRC - necessitated complete swivel housing teardown and replacement of upper bushing and top swivel pin.

I also am curious about this, as I recently replaced the oil in both swivel housings... everything fine until later in the day I drove through some deep water.

The next day I was greeted with milky oil pumping out of the ABS sensor hole. Replaced the milky oil with new oil... again driving just pushes it out the ABS sensor. I tried hylomar-ing the abs sensor but the oil pressure was too great. If I'm getting water in the oil it sounds like I need a new abs sensor seal, eh?

No problems on the other side. Both swivel pins have not had oil changes since I bought the rig ('95 with 39K at the time), I now have 160,000 miles on it. That factory oil must have been pretty good!

Make sure the level in the axle is correct and not overfilled. The hubs vent to the axle according to my Rangie manual. Also, make sure the axle breather is clear.

I had to change all of my seals at 90K miles. Did you have grease before?

Don't know if the axle breather is clear... it's something I thought about. But the milky oil indicates a bad seal somewhere that's letting water in.

I drained the front diff after this episode (dark ugly oil dripped out), and refilled up to the drain hole so I assume it's not overfilled.

How does one check if the breather is clear? Without removal, both ends seem to be a bit out of reach.

Jim

Remove banjo bolt on axle tube - and try to blow through the line (won't taste very good :-) ). Fittings is righ on top of axle tube and is easy to get to.

Clean out banjo fitting, banjo bolt (brake parts or carb cleaner) also.
