Land Rover TV Show in Motion

NEW YORK-Land Rover has brought its G4 Challenge to the small screen.

The adventure driving event launched in March in New York City with a four-wheel obstacle course along Broadway. The program is running twice, on Aug.24 and on Aug. 31, on the Outdoor Life Network

BHP, London, shot and edited the show after tracking the four-week, three-continent 4x4 race through South Africa, Australia and the Western U.S. There were 32 competitors, two each from 16 countries, chosen from several thousand applicants.

The two one-hour documentary style TV shows augment live coverage of the event , which was carried online at LandroverG4challenge.com. The TV program will take the viewer "on event" with the competitors as they battle for points around the globe living in their Land Rovers. Englishman Jamie Darling, who rode and competed alongside the contestants, serves as host.

"[BHP] had produced four half hour shows to run in Europe. We wanted two one-hour shows, so Bill Baker [LR's director of special projects] went to England to help with the editing," said Sally Eastwood, vp-franchise operations. Land Rover will be exclusive auto advertiser for the show, and will run current ads. Eastwood said Land Rover will begin selecting participants next year for another G4 Challenge in 2005

The Ford unit is also selling G4 limited edition Discovery and Freelander. In the fourth-quarter LR launches an ad campaign pitching the face-lifted 2004 Freelander, LR's entry-vehicle launched in 2001. J. Walter Thompson, Irvine, Calif., handles.
