Anyone know of a cross reference part # for a direct replacement of the stock one? I remember getting info about one being available at Napa for about $50 or so, but I lost the part #.

This doesn't help, but for $9 more you can get the Old Man Emu Damper from Expedition Exchange. Here is the link: http://www.expeditionexchange.com/ome/steeringdamper.htm

here's a dumb question...how do you know when you need a new steering damper? I have 90k miles on my D1 and I'm sure I have the original.

you might want to get one. If you do a search on the archive you will find out information on it.

If you feel substantial shudderings from your steering wheel when going over cracks/bumps in the road (especially at highway speeds) then you need to replace the damper. My 95 felt so scary that I was afraid to drive it. Then the good folks on this list told me what the problem was, I replaced it (fairly easy do-it-yourself job), and now it feels rock-solid on the highway again.

Thanks Mike. The archives were great regarding which one to get and how to fix, but not real helpful regarding diagnosing a bad steering damper.

My damper just went about a week ago and like Mike said, your steering wheel shudders quite a bit when you hit bumps, especially at higher speeds. Also, it probably won't want to self-center after you turn. I just ordered an OME steering damper as a replacement.
