My 95 DI with 190k has always had a clunk in the rear diff since I've had her about a year ago. It is a manual so I can control the amount of clunk by being very gentle with the clutch. Also recently, I changed the roto and could see that there is about 1/4 turn play in the input shaft of the rear diff (wheels on the ground). Is that normal? Should I expect a catastrophic failure? It may be time to envision the addition of an ARB... Thanks for your inputs, Lionel |

Clunks are usually trailing arm bushes or top A frame ball joint. But.............it could be your gearbox output shaft, which is a horror story. best of luck Pete S |

Pete, Thanks. Bushings were changed a few months ago. The top A frame ball joint is a possibility that I haven't ruled out yet. How do you diagnose it, or change it? I think the gearbox output shaft is fine (at least I hope so...) Lionel |

Hi Lionel Just stick a great big prybar or lever underneath it and try to feel for any movement. If you suspect the output shaft, take the PTO cover off and take a look. you will need a new gasket. Pete |

Lionel, Sounds like a normal noise to me. There is lots of play in the drive lines. You should come out with us wheeling one of these days and we can have a good old fashion listen. I bet it sounds just like mine. |

And like mine, nah, it probably sounds better than mine. What is PTO cover? Yeah, AS IF we're all going to meet up at 21 Rd. Sheesh, let me know if you do any *easy* trails. |

Hey Brian(s)! I am definitely not overly concerned with that noise. Just a bit of preventative maintenance... As far as wheeling, I am ready! I have had my 95 D1 just about a year (and have been surfing the D-Web for about the same). Result is plenty of trails ran in the Boulder area, 2" lift (sick of the sagged suspensions), 235 x 85 (sick of bottoming out) and a few other useful gadgets (rack, lights, ARB bumper, limb risers, front skid plate)... Check this out, last week end at Bill Moore's lake with 3 women screaming in the car! Cheers, Lionel

Did you make it up that one loose/scree part? Where the right is kind of mogully/gnarly and the left is just real loose? Last time I was up there my rotoflex twisted around itself, but I made it. |

I know what the acronym means, but I have never heard this term used to describe a part on stock landrover vehicles. Where is it? Is this a part typically called something else or am I just being stupid. |

Brian, No, I did not go up that way. However, we came down that way under heavy rain. Tough to control. Made me think for the first time of getting another gear ratio...I saw in your photo gallery that you are familiar with the lake... Cheers, Lionel |

Hi Brian The PTO is on the rear of the transfer box and is typically there to run things like hydraulic pumps for winches or overdrive/underdrive units. You have to remember underneath your pretty Disco is a working defender, and farmers for 50 years have run all sorts of farm implements off their trucks. Most disco owners never run anything off the transfer box as there is no hole in the rear cross member. seen a few winches though. Pete S |

Huh. The only thing back there that I am aware of is a parking brake and output for the driveshaft. |

It's the round cover to the left of the brake. Behind it is the Trans case input gear. If every thing is in neutral jiggle the gear and it slides out. You can look at the splines for wear and see if the gear is drilled. |
