Any thoughts on where in the cabin to mount these things? I think the extingisher should probably remain upright so that means the panels near the read door...is the dash a "bad" place for the Maglite? Appreciate your thoughts everyone!

For the flashlight you can put it in the trunk, next to the window. I didn't do this, it is someone elses, but it is an idea.

I have my rechargable maglite mounted on the left side of the drivers seat, on the floor board. It is easy to get to, short distance to run the wires, and out of the way. Doesnt effect getting to cd changer.

Good luck.

I have my maglite mounted to the passenger side of the center console, and my fire extinguisher is on the back door. This was a good spot for me, because I removed the factory subs when I put in my system. It doesn't really matter (from what I've been told--I may be wrong) if the fire extinguisher is upright or not. Mine is sideways.

Can I drill down into that sub box on the rear door without damaging the speakers?

I just mounted a fire extinguisher on the panel just to the right and behind the rear passenger side (it is the slanting panel where the seatbelts are mounted) it is out of the way, yet easy to access.

I have a tactical flashlight in the center console... easy to get to and just as powerful, yet smaller, than the Double-D Maglite. For emergency needs, I have a 1 million CP spot light with various filters and a built in tripod, very nice for changing a tire or roasting marshmallows... LOL.

Mark:

Yes you can drill down without damaging the speakers. However, just pull the screws from the wire mess grill and you will be able to see inside (2 minutes work). I removed the speaker too (just a couple more screws) just to be safe. I bolted mine in rather than screwing it in. I put in big backing washers to help keep the mount from coming loose.

Thanks,
Mike B.

Just be sure you mount heavy stuff like that somewhere it won't come loose and crack somebody's skull in a significant accident. It's amazing how much "safety" equipment I see mounted in a way more likely to kill somebody than ever do any good...

I have a 3-d Mag in the pocket of the driver's door and another in the pocket on the rear door.

I was considering mounting a fire extinguisher on the back of the center console, at the very bottom. That is, right where the toes of the guy in the middle back seat would be. The back of the cubby goes down straight, and has the ashtray in it (I gotta find that pic of the power outlets someone put in there) and then slants forward at the bottom. That space seems like an ideal spot -- out of the way yet easily reachable from the front seat, rear seats, or rear doors. Any comments?

Anyone see any problem with screwing into there?

I removed the useless pocket from the back door and mounted a 5lb extinguisher, 2D Cell Maglite and a first aid kit. That way all of the emergency gear is easily accessible even if the cargo area is loaded. You will want to remove the speaker and door panel to see where you can drill into the metal door panel without interfering with the door lock or wiper.

Roger, there is nothing back there. It's almost like dead space.

I mounted my Maglite on the drivers side front window trim panel (Vertical) and my fire extinguisher is mounted to the cargo door on the lower ledge next to the inside lock. I have pics, but they're on my other computer.

3 D cell light mounted to the seat platform, where your heels would hit if you pulled them all the way torward you when sitting, it sits high, just below seat, would not place in pocket, i would be afraid in case of roll over it would air for my eye, the extingusher is mounted just above driver side rear speaker.

I mounted a 4-cell mag light in two mag-lite clips on the rear door frame in front of the window just above the trim pannel on that little ledge there. Perfect flat spot for those clips held in with SS metal screws.

I also put one on the left side of the drivers seat on the floor between the seat and the door. Screwed two mag-light clips into the trim piece there.

FWIW - Some time ago a chap in UK (I think) talked about mounting a fire ext. on some brackets that are hiden under the ceiling trim just above the rear door. Apparently these clip spaces are threaded for some accessory forbidden to the rest of us. But he showed a pic of them.

I have seen where Mike Bauer has mounted his flashlight. It looks great and is very handy. I am really jealous, but I can't find the clips anywhere. I say keep equipment where you can find it without thinking and your eyes closed. In my opinion, dog guards are great protection from anything in cargo area and a good idea even if you think you have gear mounted securly.

I am trying to get a visual of the creative ways you all have found to mount equipment in forward cabin. Sounds awesome, anyone have pics??

I got my clips at home depot for like 3 bucks. They are really sturdy and hold it well. I can barely get my light out when I want it!
I'll post some pics next week when I get home.

That is where Mike said he found his. I looked there and the Home Depot near me does not have them. Did you purchase them recently?

Remember, it is good that it is that tight. In an emergency you will have adrenaline rush and you WILL be able to get it out easily :-)

Thanks, Jamie

HD usually had a bunch on a hook in the same place where they display flashlights.

i think the location where mike j's fire extinguisher is mounted is by far the best place to put it. these emergency accessories are to be used most likely in emergencies and in such cases you'd like your fire extinguisher to be readily accessible to the driver. u see people mounting their FE's on the a pillar or by the window more for looks than anything else. just like pfb mentioned, these things will do more harm than good on a crash situation.
as far as flash lights... i'd get one of these...
http://www.expeditionexchange.com/surefire/DSC02713.jpg
very bright and concentraded. these run on lithium batteries and have a 10 yr shelf life. it's pricey but worth the invenstment. imagine you have your maglite sitting there for some time and the moment you really need it... where's the juice. unless you have a rechargeable flashlight.

i just hang mine on the transfer case shifter knob. on the disco you can just slide it in the overhead map console. very compact and well made.

I find that where I have my FE mounted is accessible enough. The first time my truck caught on fire, I didn't have one, and had time enough to run into the nearest store, locate theirs, and put out the fire before any major damage happened.

The second time, I was first on the scene of an accident, and had time enough to get it from where it is mounted on the back door to help put out a fire.

I agree it is closer where Mike has his. Might save a few seconds. Can you reach it with the door closed?

my only concearn is that if someone rear-ends you or you hit something, your FE might not be there. depending on how strong that FE mount is.
hopefully that scenario never takes place.

This is where I mounted my maglite, not sure where to mount my fire extinguisher yet, would like to have it near the door though, as your car only takes 30 secs to go up in flames... At the moment i have put it in the map pocket behind the drivers seat.

Greg

In a frontal collision you're putting an awful lot of faith in the construction of the restraining mechanism to keep a couple of kilos of fire extinguisher from launching itself at the back of someone's head.

Any stuff like that should really be mounted as low as possible and as far forward as possible (passenger side footwell?).

If you buy a small fire extinguisher, you can mount it on the small foot rest on the drivers side floor board. Pics and a write up about this install can be seen at www.houstonlandroverclub.com under the tech articles section.

those are the child safety tether mount pionts, for car seats. they should have
no problems restraining up ~40 pounds. there are 3 of them across the back. if you search i did a write up in
~april on installing the 'child safety tether' things, the write up will tell you how to find
them......i have since forgotten.....

Yes. I thought of the "Missile" scenario in a frontal collision. I mounted it with a pretty sturdy mounting system. Double-sided tape should hold it, right? I also put velcro there, just to be extra sure.

I keep my sure fire in the arm rest box for the first acess, but sometimes I need to keep it in for a while like doing night repairs. Head lamp in the glove box, rechargeable million candle power light in gear bag, extra bateries... freaky
