I have a 95 Disco with 79,000 miles. I think that the transmission filter is clogged, it howls when I drive (which is not much lately), it shudderded once taking off from a stop sign but it shifts ok. Has any body had noise as a result of their transmission filter being clogged or is my transmission shot.

Might just be short of fluid....drain it & see what color you get....if it's dark brown and smells burnt that ain't a good sign...if it's clear you should be OK...these trannies are pretty tough however...one of the better parts of the Disco IMHO

Peter thanks for the info. The fluid level is high if anything, and I noticed an unusal smell from the fluid but it's still red in color. I'll drain it and see what I've got. I fear that my tansmission is on it's way out.

You sure it's the howling and not one of your differentials, or even a u-joint in the driveline?

If you have never changed the filter in the past it is time to do it now no matter what the color of the fluid. Once you drain the fluid and pull the pan make sure you drain the converter too.

Come on !

the
"filter" is nothing more than a screen andaffects almost nothing. If his fluid is "burnt" already - the filter won't do jack to change that.

If your fluid is overfull - the ZF's tend to hate that with a passion - make certain you are checking properly, and if it is overfull, drain to the proper level. If you do want to drain and flush - just use plain old Dexron and change it several times within a couple hundred miles or so, and this will get most of the old fluid out.
