What are your thoughts on the Porsche SUV. My partner just bought a turbo version. We took it off-road with a professional rally car driver...I was, to say the least, amazed. On the road, performance is crazy, insane, crazy.

The cayenne is so awesome, but I would never take it off-road, just becuase its a porsche. I wouldn't feel right. But I do want one.

By the way, in the future you might want to post these kind of non technical topics in the non-tech section.

Yeah I like the cayenne, but if I was going to buy the cayenne I'd rather buy a cerrara or the twin turbo so I would get the full package that the cayenne will never offer.

There's one that lives near me. It looks pretty cool, and every time we pass it, I joke about getting my wife one...

But, in all honesty, if I had that kind of money, I would probably buy another house...

I love Porsches but I'd definately buy a Carrera, 911, 930 or maybe a 959!?!... don't get me wrong the cayanne is cool lookin but it would be for the wife I couldn't imagine taking that where my disco goes...unless you could lift it a good 4inches with some nice 31's...lol..its in the bmw, lexus, benz catagory nice but not nice like a rover..It would look better slammed with big 22" tires..
but is it an SUV, and what the hell is an SUV these days ..seems if its 4wheel drive and shaped like a big station wagon its an SUV?? I guess the sport stands for soccer, the utility stands for a shopping tool or grocery getter, and vechicle means car or station wagon...Rovers are LCV's (Land Conquering Vehicles)
Anyway its too early and I'm babbling like a rover bench racing maniac!
Thats my 2cents ... lol

I went to the Cayenne debut, they actaully had a little off road trail set up to show its off road worthyness. Then on the other side they had an on road track to show the performance side. I could to drive on both tracks with both cars (S and Turbo) a lot of fun on the racetrack and pretty impressive off on the "off road" track, but I doubt anyone who buys on will take it off road. I mean doubt get me wrong it wasn't a hard course I was just more surrprise the car was as good as they said. It also seemed to make a hell of a lot of noise. (ABS, Traction control, hill holder, hill decent) But I drive a D1 so I'm not used to all the electronics. I have pictures.

Here's a still from a video Porsche has at their Web site. Moab? Like similar photos I've seen of the Touareg, not much flex there, but I'd guess Porsche would argue that traction control makes suspension travel less of a factor, etc.

i went wheeling with a guy who drove a G Wagon.. it just like the porsche had about.... ZERO flex. but it did have factory lockers front rear and center... which way made up for the lack of flex... as a matter of fact it put all of us to shame

Hey Han, see, you should have been at RR3 in Big Bear. Lynn and I and the kids went on a run with Carol Samons that ended up on Clarke Grade, going up to Clarke's Summit. This is one of the historic trails into Big Bear, one of the first ways into BB back in the 1920's or so. Porsche adopted it a few years back and helped to clean it up and restore it, in anticipation of the cayenne.

At the bottom of the grade, everyone was afraid that since it was a "Porsche" trail, it would be difficult. My thought was that Porsche probably would have graded that baby smooth as silk, since they would not want one of their cayenne's getting stuck or scratched. Sure enough, an easy ride all the way up, low range just in one loose spot.

It was me that bought a Cayenne. I absolutely love it. I've already put 9k miles on it in a little over 5 months, and have gone off-roading twice with it. I switched out to the Pirelli Scorpion A/T's, so my top speed is limited to about 120mph instead of the 155. It's a great ride.

As for the flex, I went to the Porsche Cayenne Experience last week in Dallas, and they let me take it over some really insane stuff (for a Porsche). I would have had no problems attempting it in my Jeep, but I never thought the Porsche would get over it so easily. When we got to one point where there were a couple of wheels off the ground (or so it felt like it), the instructor said "go ahead, open the door". Sure enough, the door opened and closed like we were on flat ground. We were in low gear the whole time but never had to lock the center diff. It was a great experience. Make me want to go out to the ranch and spend the weekend wheeling.

It is what it is. Only off road.

Phil,
p.s. My partner has 20's(deuces as the kids say). The Rover drives like a beast, on the road and off, the Cayenne is like your mistress...you'll only tell your closest friends.

Han: yes, I am going on the sept run: just have to decide which truck to take. I looked up the trail on the SBNF map: it just around the corner from the Lytle Creek Firing range.

David, I drove back home from RR3 and took the Porsche trail. It was graded to pure German perfection, you could drive a lowered 930 through.

I've got a few shots there - it is a great road, views and all, but shamelessly nearly paved.

Yeah, I took Clark's Grade home too. You can now just relax and (sometimes) enjoy the scenery. This was not the case before the road was "restored." It was weird to see it so well-graded.

Now why didn't I meet you all at RR3? lol.
Yeah, it was a great first trip for my wife and daughter, who had not been on a run before. Now the wife wants to do one of those trails in the Dweb videos :-)

I've seen old photos of Clarks Grade before the work, it looked like the forest Service did not have the budget to keep the trail up, fallen trees, good sized rocks etc... A bit too smooth now but a nice ride and yes some great views.

BTW, today's NY Times had an article about a new version of the cayenne, with the VW v6 engine in it, not as fast...
