Has anyone modified an ARB bumper for a Disco 1 so that the winch mounts upright instead of to the front plate? I have a Warn XD9000i with the integrated solenoid and prefer not to have to replace it if I go with an ARB which is really the bumper I want.

There are better bumpers out there for sure. The ARB is pretty thin and not that great of approach angle. If it does not accomodate you winch, you have an excuse to get a better bumper.

Take a look at <http://www.sinasohn.net/lrover/bumpers.html> for your options. I compiled that for my DII, but I think they all offer one for D1's as well. If you go with RoverTym or Aedofab, you can probably get them made any which way.

Had I not been under the gun, timewise, I would have waited for the TJM bumper to be in stock. If I wanted a trail rig (mostly), I would have gone RoverTym or possibly KVT. For me, mostly on-road (commuting, family, etc.) the TJM was my first choice. Because of availabilty and time, I got the ARB.
