Well, after all the good help from you guys I did get the front rotors and pads in today. HOWEVER, on the test drive to set the pads I parked it back in the drive and to my suprise the front left was SMOKING qiute alot. (read-BAD) snooping around I see brake fluid dripping down the swingarm. I pop the hood and the master cylinder resevior had leaked out the cap. So now the question is whats up with that? Was the smoke simply the cleaner and such burning off? or did I boil the brake fluid on a short(2 mile drive)? Is the caliper not on right? or is it dragging a pad? Jeez uz ideas?

when you pushed the calipers in it forced the brake fluid back up into the master cylinder causing it to be over filled. I'm guessing the master was full when you started the procedure.easy to overlook. be sure to hose the brake fluid off of everything. it does bad things to rubber products and paint. not a big deal.

Hey That's pretty smart, didn't think of that one, and a relief as well. Thanks! I will hose off the fluid as soon as the truck cools. On the smoking pads? probably just the cleaners and such burning off right?

I would say, where is the smoke and fluid coming from? If it's at the wheel, it may be a leak in the brake line. If it's on the engine block, then it's probably dripping from an overflow as mentioned.

I didn't have to remove any fluid though. I took the lid off the master cylinder and then did the brake change. No fluid overflows.

Thanx all, it looks like the master cylinder indeed overflowed from compressing the caliper pistons back, there was no leak(thanyou jesus)from anywhere in caliper area. No smoke from wheel after blasting out for Sesamee chicken and Gen. Tao's platter. so it looks like a case of "PARPD", Premature After Repair Panic Disorder......

FYI - next time open the bleed screws on the calipers when you compress them. Much easier and better for the system not to backflush fluid.

Bill,

I've not heard that before. Why is backflushing brake fluid to the master cylinder not good?

ABS valve bodies (any vehicle) generally do not like to have crap flushed backwards through them - I guess it's related to the chance of dislodging any particles which may then get stuck in an inopportune place in the solenoid valves in the ABS unit.

Also - just a hell of a lot easier to open bleed screws than to run into what Dave did.
