my driver window will not go down. It goes about half way than looks like its coming out of the groove while it makes a bad grinding sound. I found out its the metal arms or something that are causing it. The thing is though it happened about three months ago and went away shortly after and just now came back up. Any suggestions if its easily fixable and how. Also what all needs to be unscrewed and does the door molding just pop off once the screws are taken out. Has anyone done this repair, how hard or any other details that could be offered. Thanks for anyone's help. Brett |

(1) It's a bad/bent window regulator (the metal levers and such that actually lift up the window and allow it to fall). (2) It can be fixed. The Tech section has a how-to for the rear regulator and it's pretty close. (3) It's not a fun fix. You'll need to pop the door panel off after unscrewing screws, and I guarantee you'll break the pins that hold it in. (4) It is, however, a good Saturday shade-tree job. You'll need: (a) A new regulator (call Nathan Crabtree - number is at http://www.discountrovers.com) (b) Screwdrivers to take off screws and reattach things (c) 3 beers (d) A light to see where things attach (e) Patience Good luck! You could always take pictures and write up a tech article on it, so future people (with their fancy future clothing and futuristic haircuts) can do it too! Andy |

I would recommend getting a new window regulator if thats the cause of the problem. It seems common for the plastic wheels inside to harden and break causing problems. You can drill out the old wheel and bolt a new wheel in, but in my opinion, its a pain and time consuming task. I had to run to 2-3 different hardware stores to find a wheel that was similair in size, grind the wheel down to fit, then bolt it up. Because of all the rain and the truck not fitting in the garage,I did'nt want to wait for shipping of the new regulator. It works good, but took awhile to do. I ended up buying two regulators anyways and swaping the new ones in. In case of future failures I can just swap them out with the old repaired ones. Also, just for peace of mind knowing that your windows (broken wheels, metal fatigue, ect) won't crap on you while your on vacation far from home. As far as the platic pins that hold the door panel on, use a panel/trim removal tool and pry under the pins. Start at the bottom corner and pull up gently and you'll be able to see the pins and get under them to pry them out. Good luck. |
