I have a 98 LSE D1 which I have no problems with but it does have 93k miles on it. I was considering getting a newer model with less miles on it. Also, my 98 has the jump seats in it and I use them. I have three kids and when we take other people the 7 seats come in handy. The DII has the forward seats which would probably work out better. Besides, I'm concerned with losing all the value when that century mark turns. I think I can get some good money for my D1 yet. New stock tires and brakes and no issues, everying works and looks new. (except for the WB an the radio, I think the antenna is shot and I haven't replaced it yet.) My question is, should I change up, and do the 99/00 DII's have alot of problems. Small problems don't bother me but the big ones are a pain in the ass. After all it is our primary vehicle. Thanks for any replies. Jim Kemp |

Jim, just my $.02 worth, I think the bottom line in determining when to buy a new vehicle is whether or not you can pay cash for the new one ? If you can't, hold on to the one you have. It's cheaper to replace the radio and pay about a $1k a year in up keep vs a monthly payment. Besides, I've done some research here and some other sites and LRs (including Discos) do hold up 100+k miles. If you do a search in the archives there have been a few discussions on here regarding owners getting high mileage out of their trucks. I am assuming that you have kept up the requisite service on your truck. Just my opinion! |

I'm not so concerned with financing, however, ownership over time can be costly. Repairs can often exceed $1k when you reach upper mileage. I know my DI is reliable for at least another 50k - 75k. Right now, if I sold my DI for $12.5k, it would have only cost $2800.00 a year to own and run. That's less than a lease on a Honda Civic or close to it anyway. I need to know if the 98 DI is a better truck than a 99/00 DII. Thank you for your reply Chris |

If I remember correctly the posts that I read regarding the high mileage D1s stated their repair/regular maintenance costs weren't that much different than what I spend now (which is between $1-2k/year). Now whether or not the 98D1 is better than the 99-00 D2 should be an interersting debate. Another question to ask perhaps is whether or not there is a significant difference between the 99 and 00 D2, given the 99 was the first year of the D2? You might to contact John Robison at www.robisonservice.com. Look under his Service/Land Rover/Buying Advice section and he details the good and bad with each type of LR. He's fairly responsive to emails too and is well respected. He'd be a good contact to address your question. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what the consensus is. Personally, when I get another one I'll either buy a 99 D1 (because I like the CDL) or save like mad and buy an 04 (supposedly the CDL is coming back??) Good luck, this should be an interesting topic. |
