Look in the center of you instument cluster at the bottom. If there is a little blinking light, use either the key fob or the driver(LH) front door key lock and lock your disco, then unlock it and try again. You could be suffering from a random immobileizer activation. Mine has done this on a couple of occasions.

I checked that and that isnt it.
I checked all the fuses and they are good and its just dead, the instaments all light up like its fine and then nothing when I turn the key.

Did you pull the battery and have it load tested? My battery was the culprit the other day, volt meter showed it sitting at 12.3v or so.. it just had a bad cell or something. Does your starter make a clicking noise when you turn the key?

One more thing, sometimes my shifter doesn't allow me to start the vehicle, something like mentioned above. If I apply my foot brake, and turn the ignition to "on", then depress button on gear selector and run it back and forth all the way down and up a couple of times she fires right up. Good luck to ya.. Hopefully just a battery though..

Matt - this has happened a handful of times to other members here including me. It is most common in the 96's and seems that the battery is just disconnected right? With my rig when I went to start it everything was normal until I turn the key over and then its as if the battery just goes dead. I haven't exactly pinpointed this problem but it does have something to do with bad grounds and the alarm/ignition immobilization system. The main culprit to this is the ground wire that leads from the starter to the battery. The first place to start would be to clean the contacts to the starter. Take off the heat shield and unhook the wires. Chances are they are very gunked up. This may or may not fix your problem. i did this and haven't had any problems for about 6 months.

If you need to reset your system (so you can attempt to start the rig) lock and unlock the doors using the key (not the fob) and let the alarm set itself. If the doors don't lock then wait an hour or two and try again. The immobilization system is on a timer of sorts (kind of like an hour glass - when all the sand flows through it reinitiallizes) so when you rearm the system using the key it resets. It should start after this but it's only temporary. Get this fixed ASAP - you don't want to be stranded somewhere.

I hope this helps. Do a search in the archives. There should be several topics of this dated the first of the year (Jan-April).

ok so i check the starter and the conectors are clean, void of build up and crap. the alarm is working correctly. Now Like i mentioned I am fairly new to land rovers. this being said bare with me and my ignorance.. I dont hear the tell tale clicking of a dead batt and all is still turning on, fan (when i turn it on) lights, radio and panel lights up. could it still be the batt?

> nothing not a clicking sound from the batt

That's the starter selenoid, and clicking is a tell-tale sign of a bad or undercharged battery. Try jump starting it. Even that, however, won't always work if the battery has a short.

Fetch the starter a stout blow with a mallet. Or two or three.

Sometimes the starter brushes hang up and a whack or two will free them up.

Jump start the selenoid and make sure that the starter is good. (a good set of rubber handled plyers)
