Hi all! Well I finally got my Series II to a shop that found the problem with a chirping noise under the rover. It seems I have a bad rear Universal Joint on the front end. Evidently, there is a front UV joint and and a rear UV joint in each rover. I cannot find any literature in my owners manual on the UV joint. The shop that diagnosed the problem says that usually the front UV joint has been the problem.(they called a dealer) They want $142 (labor not included) to fix the rear joint and $550 (labor not included) to replace the whole piece. Front and rear UV joints. The shop I am using seems honest. They can replace the rear UV joint but want me to understand the whole thing might need to be replaced down the road. I have 66,000 miles on her. Can anyone help with information or a recommendation? The shop says I should ask Land Rover America to cover some of the costs of a total replacement. ie these parts are not supposed to break this early in the rovers life. Help!!!

Silly. You have a ton of options that will result in far less than $700+labor.

If the D2 is anything like a D1, the front driveshaft will have 2 ujoint on it. You could take this to a drive line shop and see what they would charge to fix it (bench work to fix ujoints is pretty cheap). Or you could buy a replacement drive shaft from someone and bolt it on yourself (D1 front shaft is 8 bolts and easy to do). Or you could buy an HD shaft from Tom Woods or GBR and replace it yourself. Of course you could always look at rover cannibal or post in the wanted area to see if there is anyone there with a used one for cheap.

Are you sure that they are talking driveshaft ujoints? Do you men front and rear ujoints of the front driveshaft or something about the front driveshaft and rear driveshaft? Your emails is a bit confusing at least to me.

Greasable Universal Joints for the D2 are $20 or so from your local Auto Parts store.. NAPA, O'Reilly, etc. If you could pull your driveshaft yourself (which is easy on a D1, not so sure on a D2), and just take that to local reputable grease monkey, they should charge you less than an hours labor to change out both of them on your front driveshaft.

I had 1 ujoint and 1 yoke replaced on my rear driveshaft. That plus a balance parts and labor was $71 USD. Yes greasable is best.

Brian, it is the rear UV joint on the front driveshaft. I like the idea of going to NAPA as you and Robert have suggested and just buying new UV joints. I know a shop that can put them on and charge me a reasonable fee. I would try myself but I dont have a lift and limited on my tools. Do you all know if there is a specific UV joint I have to buy? I agree on the greaseable one. I have a grease gun and keep it well lubed. thanks, Aubrey

Sorry, I have no idea on the type of ujoint. However a good shop can likely supply the joint as well, but to be safe you can see if you get a response here.

The NAPA's for my Rangie are greaseable. I did them myself, but it's one of those jobs that could be done easier by a shop with a press and other specific tools.
